Best Areas to Stay in Tirana (Neighbourhoods)

Here’s a breakdown of the best areas to stay in Tirana.

Zona 1 – Best Place to Stay in Tirana to Live Like a Local

Zona 1 is a large neighbourhood between Skanderbeg Square, and the Lana River. It’s very close to Tirana’s new market, the New Bazaar which is the place to be for foodies. You can pick up fresh fruit and vegetables, olives and spices, or maybe even a bottle of local raki!

best airbnb in tirana

The New Bazaar is Albania’s largest fish market, so there are many amazing seafood restaurants around the Bazaar.

Zona 1 is the best place to stay in Tirana for getting away from the hustle and bustle of the City Centre. It is a place to enjoy the slower pace of life with the locals. Sit in one of the many cafés and sip on an espresso macchiato whilst watching the world go by.

There are some great accommodations in Tirana, but my choice in Zona 1 would be the beautiful traditional house set in the gardens.

Blloku – Best Place to Stay in Tirana for Nightlife

If you’re wondering where to stay in Tirana for nightlife, Blloku is the place to be. Once closed off to people who were not members of the Communist Party, this is now the most popular and famous neighbourhood in Tirana.

You’ll see a lot of communist-era’ attractions’ here. This includes the former residence of Enver Hoxha, the communist dictator, as well as his right-hand man, Mehmet Shehu.

best airbnbs in tirana

Today, it is home to some of the city’s best bars, restaurants and lively cafés. Some of my favourite spots include Radio Bar, Meduza and Komiteti.

Komiteti is a bar like no other in Tirana. It’s named after the Central Committee of the Communist Party, which was known as Komiteti.

Its interior is inspired by the communist era in Albania. Its founder initially used Komiteti to store and display his 17,000 collectables from that time. Head inside and you will find all kinds! From antiques to traditional clothing, household items, and unique trinkets.

It’s a nice place to have a drink and take it from there. With the number of bars nearby, who knows where the night will take you.

I would recommend that you stay in this relaxing apartment in Blloku.

Komuna e Parisit – Best Place to Stay in Tirana for Families

Komuna e Parisit is one of the more tranquil places to stay in Tirana. The good thing about this neighbourhood is that it’s still within walking distance of the centre.

Its biggest draw is its proximity to the Grand Park of Tirana and the Artificial Lake. Take an afternoon stroll, and stop by one of the many lakeside cafés or bars for a sunset tipple. Complete an outdoor workout in the beautiful surroundings, or take the kids for some fun in the big park. It has something for everyone.

Grand Park of Tirana

I would recommend the Bali-inspired Apartment, as it’s in one of the best places to stay in Tirana. It’s also ideally located between Blloku and the Grand Park of Tirana.

Tregu Cam – Best Place to Stay in Tirana for Culture and History

One of the most centrally located neighbourhoods is Tregu Cam. Its proximity to the most famous attractions, including museums and historical landmarks, is ideal. This makes it the perfect place for travellers seeking to soak up the Albanian history and culture

Some of my favourites include the National History Museum, located at Skanderbeg Square, and BunkArt2, which is an interesting museum built inside a bunker.

Its central location makes it a perfect base for exploring the other neighbourhoods in Tirana as they are all within walking distance.

I would recommend the large modern apartment, as the views of both the city and mountains make it one of the best Airbnbs in Tirana.

21 Dhjetori – Best Place to Stay in Tirana for Café Culture

Whilst there are cafés on pretty much every corner in Tirana, 21 Dhjetori has some of the best.

21 Dhjetori translates from Albanian as 21 December, which is the birthday of Joseph Stalin. It was named in his honour during the communist era in Albania.

After the fall of communism in Albania, this square was renamed Atatürk Square in honour of the Turkish president, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. However, it is still more commonly referred to as 21 Dhjetori today.

It’s known as the backpacker area of Tirana as it’s home to plenty of hostels. It also has more affordable places to eat and drink compared to the Blloku neighbourhood.

21 Dhjetori is a great place to base yourself if you’re travelling on a budget, whilst remaining within walking distance of the main tourist attractions in Tirana.

One of my favourite apartments in Tirana is the chic apartment located in the heart of 21 Dhjetori, for its stunning sunrise and sunset views.
