I’ve been to Oxford on many occasions and often use it as a base to explore some of the nearby places from Blenheim Palace to Stonehenge, and the beautiful towns and villages in the surrounding area from Bath, Cirencester and Stroud to Chipping Norton, Bibury, and Broadway.

As the city sits right on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there are plenty of options for getting into the great outdoors for hiking, biking, and other fun day trips from Oxford in the fresh air.

Below, you’ll find a wide variety of Oxford day trips from picturesque English villages and market towns to historical, cultural, and natural landmarks. Whether you want to browse boutique shops, learn something about British history, or get out into the beautiful countryside, there’s something to be enjoyed by everyone.

1. Bourton-on-the-Water

The Cotswold village of Bourton-on-the-Water is one of the most picturesque places in the country. The River Windrush winds its way through the village and under historic stone bridges and along rustic cottages of Cotswold stone. There are lots of things to do in Bourton from paddling in the river to exploring the model village.

Other Bourton attractions include the Motoring and Toy Museum, Greystones Nature Reserve, and my favorite – the Hawkstone Brewery (made famous by Jeremy Clarkson’s lager). Bourton is definitely one of the best day trips from Oxford if you’re keen to see one of the prettiest villages in the country.

2. Chipping Norton

Chipping Norton is a charming market town in the Cotswolds, not far from Oxford, that’s famous for its 17th Century Almshouses. There’s lots to do in the town from taking a dip in the open-air swimming pool to seeing a show at the Chipping Norton Theatre and browsing the farmers’ market which runs every Wednesday.

Nearby, you’ll find Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm where you can buy local produce and craft beers made by local brewers. Historic Bliss Tweed Mill is another of the town’s attractions and this is one of the best Oxford day trips as there’s so much to see and do.

3. See the Rollright Stones

The Rollright Stones is an attraction in the form of an ancient stone circle dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods. The circle consists of three main groups of stones. These are the King’s Men, the Whispering Knights, and the King Stone which stands on its own outside of the circle.

As someone with a keen interest in ancient history, I visited the Rollright Stones while on my last visit to the Cotswolds and it’s one of the most impressive sites in the country, along with nearby Avebury and Stonehenge (see below). The circle is hidden in lush woodland overlooking hilly pastures and offers some really stunning views of the countryside.

Getting There: Due to the rural location, driving is the best way to get to the Rollright Stones. It takes around 45 minutes to drive the 23 miles from Oxford along the A33.

4. Bath

The city of Bath is one of my favorite places in England thanks to its Roman history, gorgeous Georgian architecture, and healing thermal spas. Bath is one of the best day trips from Oxford and really is worth a visit for its Roman baths alone, dating back over 2,000 years.

There are plenty of other interesting attractions from the Jane Austen Museum to Mary Shelly’s House of Frankenstein, Pulteney Bridge, and the Royal Victoria Park. There’s an old railway track linking the city to Bristol which makes for a fantastic bike ride (I did this a few years ago).

5. Stonehenge

The impressive neolithic stone circle at Stonehenge is one of the top day tours from Oxford and a must-visit English landmark. No one quite knows how these stones got where they did over 5,000 years ago, but one thing’s for sure; it has to be seen to be believed.

I’ve visited Stonehenge countless times on my way to Cornwall over the years and it never fails to impress. The site is on Salisbury Plain with impressive views for miles around. There’s a visitor center with artifacts uncovered nearby on display and a recreation of a Neolithic village.

6. Broadway

The stunning village of Broadway is another of the most picturesque in the Cotswolds. There’s plenty to do from admiring the High Street with its honey-colored buildings made of Cotswold stone to exploring boutique shops, walking through the large deer park, and climbing the Broadway Tower for panoramic views.

Other nearby attractions include the colorful Lavender Farm, Dover’s Hill Nature Reserve, and Snowshill Manor House and Gardens. Broadway is also known for its arts scene and the annual Broadway Arts Festival each June. This is one of the best Oxford day trips for families thanks to the many ways to spend a day here.

7. Blenheim Palace

The impressive Blenheim Palace is a large country mansion that was built in the early 18th century. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of England’s finest examples of Baroque architecture. The Palace is the ancestral home and birthplace of war-time prime minister Sir Winston Churchill.

Visiting Blenheim is an easy day trip from Oxford as it’s just over 9 miles (14 km) from the city. This is a must for history lovers like myself. You can explore the house and surrounding gardens, and there are plenty of events throughout the year (check the website to see what’s currently on).

The palace is open daily from 10 am until 4:45 pm and tickets cost £22.50 for adults and £11.50 for children (you can get a discount if you travel by public transport). Facilities include a number of cafes and restaurants and a shop to browse making it an excellent day out for the entire family.

8. Stroud

The small market town of Stroud is located in the heart of the Cotswolds and is one of my favorite day trips from Oxford (I have friends that live here so visit regularly). There’s plenty to do from browsing the farmers’ markets to having a night out at Stroud Brewery, exploring the picturesque high street, and visiting the Museum in the Park.

Stroud is also just a couple of miles from the gorgeous village of Slad, the birthplace of my favorite author Laurie Lee. The village is well worth a visit for its scenic, countryside location along a large valley, its historic church, and the excellent Woolpack Pub which is a great place for a spot of lunch.

9. Stow-on-the-Wold

One of the best day trips around Oxford is to the gorgeous market town of Stow-on-the-Wold. Stow is situated on top of a hill that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Cotswold countryside (“Wold” means hill in old English). The place has an interesting history dating back to the medieval period and is famous for its historic market square.

Visit the picturesque St Edward’s Church with its impressive doorway that looks like it’s been lifted straight out of The Lord of The Rings set. Stow is famous for its antique shops like the Tara Antiques Centre and is also home to the oldest pub in England – the Porch House.

The picturesque English village of Avebury is famous for its bronze-age standing stone circle on the village green. The circle dates back to between 2850 BC and 2200 BC and forms part of the largest stone circles in Britain. The village is steeped in myth and folklore making it one of the most unique Oxford day trips.

Avebury itself is a beautiful village and well worth exploring. The rustic Wagon and Horses pub is a great place to stop for a bite to eat and a pint with charming views across the village green.

11. Cirencester

The pleasant market town of Cirencester is known for its Roman history, attractions, and many excellent cafes, restaurants, and pubs. There are lots of green spaces around the town from Cirencester Park to Cerney House and Gardens.

There’s a weekly farmers’ market with farmers selling local produce such as meat and vegetables, sauces, beers, ciders, and wines. The Corinium Museum details the town’s history and there’s an open-air swimming pool perfect for cooling off on summer’s days. Along with nearby Stroud, Cirencester is one of my favorite towns in the Cotswolds.

12. Bibury

Bibury is one of the most traditional Cotswolds villages with gorgeous, honey-colored stone cottages featuring thatched roofs, quaint gardens, and brightly colored flowerbeds. It’s home to the famous Arlington Row of houses which date back to the 14th Century and make for one of the top sights in the region (and a great place for the perfect English photograph).

You can walk along the picturesque River Coln that winds through the village and stop for lunch at The Catherine Wheel (if you happen to be there on a Sunday they do a great roast!). The village is also famed for its trout farm and restaurant which serves up this fresh, local delicacy.

13. Hike the Thames Path from Oxford to Abingdon

I love a good hike and the stretch of trail from Oxford to Abingdon takes you on a journey through the heart of the beautiful English countryside. This 9.6 mile (15.6 km) point-to-point hike takes around four hours but can be completed over a whole day if you take a picnic or stop off along the way for lunch.

The path follows meadows along the side of the River Thames as it winds its way through the Oxfordshire countryside. You’ll have the opportunity to spot local birds and wildlife as the trail passes through many nature reserves like Rivermead Park. You can return to Oxford on the X2 or X3 bus.

14. Henley-on-Thames

Henley-on-Thames is a charming town not far from Oxford and famous for its annual regatta and connection to the sport of rowing. The Henley Royal Regatta has been held almost every year since 1839 (with the exception of the two world wars and covid).

Beautiful old Georgian buildings line the waterfront and the town center is home to many boutique shops selling everything from second-hand books to local produce. The town is surrounded by the beautiful Chiltern Hills where you’ll find some of England’s finest wineries such as the Chiltern Valley Winery and Brewery.

Getting There: Driving to Henley-on-Thames takes just over 30 minutes via the A4074 and A4130. There aren’t any direct trains or buses, but you can take bus 33 and change to bus 23 at Didcot.

15. Cotswolds Water Park

One of the best day trips from Oxford is a visit to the Cotswolds Water Park with its 180 lakes spread over 42 square miles. There are lots of fun activities on offer from riverside walks and picnics to boating, kayaking, and swimming making this one of my favorite places to go in summer and an ideal place for families.

This unique wetland habitat is a breeding ground for thousands of bird species and an excellent place for wildlife watching. There’s even a beach complete with sand for swimming, making sandcastles, and many different watersports to try. You’ll also find a cozy beach shack cafe, and you can hire a BBQ.

Depending on the type of work you do, you may need to tailor this list a little. But it’s a good starting point for all digital nomads.

15 Must-Haves for a Nomadic Workspace

Whether you’re a seasoned nomad or just starting your remote work journey, these essential tools and gadgets will help you create your very own personal office wherever you choose to base yourself in the world.

Some of these items are all about productivity, some are about comfort, and others are for security. I use them all on a near-daily basis and recommend them for all digital nomads, whichever field (literally and/or figuratively) you work in.

1. A Reliable and Powerful Laptop (The Most Essential Item in Every Digital Nomad Setup)

It kind of goes without saying, but if you want to be able to work remotely, you will almost certainly need a laptop to be able to do this. And because it’s likely to be the most essential piece of kit to aid your ability to earn money from anywhere in the world, it’s worth investing in a good one.

I have a 13-inch MacBook Pro and I couldn’t recommend it any higher. They’re definitely on the pricier end of the laptop spectrum, but for me, they’re totally worth it. As a remote worker, you need your laptop to be fast, reliable, and powerful, and MacBook Pros deliver on all of these counts.

I went with the 13-inch model because it’s easy to pack away and transport around. The battery life is also pretty good, and I love how intuitive and easy it makes organizing all of my work and personal stuff. Editing photos and synchronizing everything with my iPhone is also super simple.

2. Foldable Ergonomic Laptop Stand

If you’re going to be spending hours working on a laptop, you’ll want a foldable ergonomic laptop stand. This raises the screen of your computer so it’s closer to eye level and helps prevent neck and back strain, which are common occupational hazards for remote workers.

You might see photos of digital nomads working from a sun lounger, with their laptops (and a cocktail) balanced on their laps. But, trust me, this is not a great way to get work done and is virtually guaranteed to give you a sore back and neck after more than about an hour.

I own one of these stands and take it everywhere with me. Go for a model that’s lightweight and compact, but one that’s stable and can easily and safely support the weight of your laptop.

It’s definitely worth the (relatively small) extra expense to ensure that you stay comfortable and don’t hurt yourself while working from your chosen location. Click here for more info.

3. Keyboard and Mouse

If you have a foldable laptop stand (and you should – see above), you’ll also want to invest in a portable keyboard and mouse. With this combination, you essentially have a desktop setup, with your screen at eye level, and your keyboard and mouse on the desk in front of you.

If I’m doing less than half an hour’s work, I often don’t bother getting this all set up. But for longer stints behind the screen, these things really are essential to keep you comfortable and prevent soreness.

Sure, a keyboard and mouse isn’t a particularly exciting or fun thing to spend money on. But it’s worth it a million times over, and your body will thank you for it, I promise!

4. Noise-Canceling Headphones

I love my noise-canceling headphones! They’re amazing for flights and train journeys, when your neighbor is doing their seemingly endless DIY, and especially when trying to get work completed in a noisy environment like a cafe or coworking space.

Look for a pair with excellent noise-canceling capabilities. I’ve been a big fan of Bose headphones for years, and currently own a pair of QuietComfort 45s. I use them almost every day and they form a key part of my digital nomad work setup.

The sound quality is fantastic and they have industry-leading noise cancelation technology. Their over-ear design is also much better for your ears (and more comfortable) than earbud-style headphones, so I think they’re definitely worth carrying a slightly bulkier case around for.

5. External Monitor

Whether or not to travel with a portable external monitor comes down to personal preference and the type of work you do. For many people, adding an external monitor to their portable office setup can significantly enhance their productivity by increasing the amount of visible screen space available.

For example, you can read a page on one screen while typing on the other and also have a few different folders open at the same time. This can help with multitasking and can make your workflow much more efficient.

However, other people prefer only using one screen and, for these workers, an external monitor would be an unnecessary extra thing to have to carry around. There’s no right answer, it’s all about whatever’s best for you.

These pieces of tech have become much lighter and more affordable in recent years. I don’t currently own one, but have experimented with other people’s and can definitely see the benefits. I’m considering investing in one in the near future. For more information, click here.

6. Portable Wi-Fi Router

There are very few things more important to a digital nomad than stable, reliable internet. In many parts of the world, finding such a connection can be a challenge, which is why having a portable WiFi router is a very good idea.

Some of these come with an inbuilt SIM card that works in most countries (check the coverage before buying one of these). Others require you to buy a local SIM card wherever you are, which you insert into the device to access mobile 4G internet via WiFi.

The main advantage of using one of these over simply tethering from your phone’s mobile internet is that you can connect multiple devices simultaneously. 7. Local Sim Card or eSIM

International roaming charges can be extortionate. If I’m based in a country for more than a couple of weeks, I usually pick up a local SIM card or, even better, an eSIM so that I always have mobile internet to hand.

These tend to be very affordable in most places. For example, in Sri Lanka, I bought an eSIM from Dialog with 50 GB of mobile data, (more than I could ever possibly hope to need), each month for less than $10 USD.

I don’t normally bother with packages that include international phone calls. These tend to cost more, and you can normally just use WiFi calling, Zoom, or WhatsApp to speak to anyone that you need to.

If you have a portable WiFi router that takes physical SIM cards, all you need to do is insert your local SIM card, and away you go. Alternatively, put the local SIM card into your phone or, if your phone is eSIM compatible, activate the eSIM and then you can use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

8. VPN

Cyber security is an ever-evolving field, and it’s important to take steps to protect yourself from cyber fraud and the theft of your personal information. That’s why you should always use a VPN whenever you connect to public WiFi networks and any other internet sources that aren’t secure.

VPNs encrypt the data you send and receive online, keeping any sensitive information and data safe from hackers and other cybercriminals. They also allow you to access content that might be blocked or censored in certain countries (e.g. free media in China).

With a reliable VPN, you can keep your online activity and data safe and secure no matter where you are in the world. This is particularly important for digital nomads, who run their businesses online. It also gives you extra peace of mind when managing your finances online.

9. Universal Power Adapter

Another small but crucial component of your digital nomad office setup is a universal power adapter. This ensures that you can charge your devices and connect to mains electricity wherever you are in the world.

I have this one and take it everywhere with me. It’s lightweight, compact, and has 4 USB-A ports and 1 USB-C port, as well as a multi-input socket that accepts most plug types (U.S., European, UK, Australian, etc.). This means that you can charge up to 6 devices at once from one outlet.

10. Portable External Hard Drive

One thing that everybody should include in their remote office setup is a portable external hard drive.

Imagine you’re happily working away from some tropical paradise and, all of a sudden, your laptop dies. You need to take it to be repaired and, in the process, all of its data is erased. This happened to me when I was staying in Mirissa, in southern Sri Lanka, and trust me when I say it was a bad week…

Happily, if you have a hard drive containing a recent backup of your computer, your files are all safe and you shouldn’t lose too much. Ideally, you won’t lose anything at all.

Top tip: buy two of these and store a backup of your computer on each one. Take one with you traveling and leave one at home (with a relative or close friend).

That way, if the worst comes to the worst and you lose everything you took away with you, at least you have a semi-recent backup of your computer waiting for you at home. A small consolation, I know, but definitely better than losing everything forever!

11. Ergonomic Mousemat

It might sound like a tiny thing, but having an ergonomic mousemat – basically, one with a cushion pad for you to rest your wrist on – can work wonders for preventing repetitive strain injuries.

They also allow you to use your mouse on any surface, and they come in a huge range of different shapes, styles, and colors.

12. USB Hub

Many modern laptops come with an annoying lack of USB ports. And some – I’m looking at you, Apple – don’t have any regular (USB-A) ports at all.

An easy way to fix this issue is to buy a USB hub to connect to your laptop. There are various options to pick from, and you should check which models will fit your laptop before making a purchase.

But, essentially, they expand the number of USB ports that your laptop has. Some, like this one, also give you a range of different ports, such as USB-A, USB-C, SD, and Micro SD (for camera memory cards).

Again, it’s not exactly a luxury purchase. But it will significantly improve the functionality of your laptop and is a handy addition to any remote office setup. Click here to learn more.

13. Travel-Friendly Desk Lamp

A compact, USB-powered desk lamp is an excellent thing to have when working in dimly lit environments, or for late-night work sessions.

Choose one with a flexible neck, allowing you to position the light exactly where you need it most. Many of the better models have different brightness settings as well as special LED technology that imitates sunlight and can help reduce eyestrain.

As well as enhancing your digital nomad workspace, these lamps are also great for cooking, camping, sitting outside at night, and reading in bed, so there are multiple uses available from one modest purchase.

14. Notebook or Planner

In a world dominated by digital devices, the suggestion to carry around a physical notebook or planner might seem counterintuitive. However, there is something uniquely satisfying and effective about putting pen to paper, and I’m a big fan of writing certain things down.

True, I do virtually all of my work on my laptop. But I always make room for a physical notepad in my nomad working space. I find them especially helpful for organizing my tasks and priorities. Screen-based to-do lists just don’t do it for me, I love the feeling of physically ticking things off a list.

You don’t need me to tell you that there are tens of thousands of different notebooks out there, and it doesn’t really matter which one you buy.

This one kind of depends on where you’ll be working. Personally, when I’m working from an Airbnb or apartment, I love to have a little bit of quiet music on in the background. And it’s always nicer to have music playing from a speaker rather than wearing headphones all the time, right?

Digital Nomad Setup: Things to Consider

As a digital nomad, it’s crucial that your remote office setup supports the need to maximize your productivity and comfort. Here are a few key factors to consider when setting up your digital nomad workspace:

• Portability: Since you need to be able to pack up and take your office around with you, opt for compact, lightweight equipment. Ideally, everything you need for work should fit into one medium-sized backpack and be comfortable to carry.

Personally, I like writing to-do lists down in my physical notebook and setting reminders on my phone calendar for the most pressing items. Some people prefer digital tools like project management software and note-taking apps. Figure out whatever works best for you.
• Adaptability: One of my favorite things about the nomadic lifestyle is that you can be flexible and try out various different work environments. Experiment with different work setups, such as co-working spaces, cafes, or outdoor locations, to find what’s most effective for you. Everyone’s different after all!

I’ve been visiting the Cotswolds for years as I have friends in the region, and I love checking out all the cool places to visit in Stow-on-the-Wold whenever I’m in the area. It’s one of the prettiest small towns in England and has plenty of excellent eateries serving seasonal, local dishes.

The town is perched on a hilltop overlooking the rolling hills of the Cotswolds and has been an important trading center for centuries. It’s the highest town in the region and stands at 800 feet (244 meters) above sea level. It also hosts a regular farmers’ market selling local produce that attracts many visitors eager to browse regional goods.

Below, you’ll find a selection of the best Stow-on-the-Wold attractions from medieval castles to age-old markets, gardens, shops, and pubs. There’s something for everyone in Stow and the place deserves to be high on the list of any traveller to England.

1. Visit the Market Square

One of the best things to do in Stow-on-the-Wold is to see the Market Square which is the main hub of the town. There’s a farmers’ market here on the second and last Thursday of the month, from April to September, and on the second Thursday from October to March.

The market is the perfect place to pick up fresh, local produce from across the Cotswolds and the southwest. From jams and preserves to chutneys, cooking sauces, and locally made beers, ciders, and gins, this is one of my favorite places to shop for artisan foods and goodies.

The Market Square is the town’s beating heart and is surrounded by gorgeous buildings made of honey-colored Cotswold Stone. You’ll find a range of shops and cafes around the square selling everything from second-hand books and antiques to cream teas and other local specialties.

2. See St Edward’s Church

The medieval St Edward’s Church is a Grade II listed building that dates back as far as the 11th Century with over 1,000 years of history. This Norman church was first consecrated in 1086 making it one of the most historical buildings in the Cotswolds, and indeed the whole of England.

One of the most impressive things about St Edward’s is its north-facing door which is flanked by two large yew trees growing as if from the church walls. The doorway looks like it’s been taken straight from the set of The Lord of the Rings and you might find the odd Hobbit hiding behind.

The picturesque churchyard makes a great escape from the bustling town center and is one of my favorite places to sit and take a few minute’s away from it all. It’s also very photogenic, especially the ancient doorway. The church and grounds are open to the public, and visiting is one of the best free things to do in Stow-on-the-Wold.

3. Have a Pint in the Oldest Inn in England

The historic Porch House is one of the oldest inns in England. This beautiful, rustic building made of trademark Cotswold stone has been dated back as far as the year 947 making it well over 1,000 years old. The pub has a lively bar, a gorgeous outside terrace, a conservatory, and a restaurant.

Whether you’re looking for a quick lunchtime nibble, a three-course evening meal, or just a few drinks in the beer garden, you can’t go wrong. I love a good, traditional pub and The Porch is one of the finest I’ve ever been to. There’s an excellent selection of local beers and ciders too.

The restaurant serves upmarket pub food with a modern twist. The chefs use local and seasonal produce to craft exquisite dishes from sizzling steaks to king prawn curry, and an excellent Sunday roast. The quality and service is outstanding, and the pub has prices to match. It’s a great option for a special occasion.

4. Browse the Artworks at the Fosse Gallery

Fans of contemporary art should head to the Fosse Gallery which has been showcasing artworks since 1980. The gallery is recognized as one of the most important in the UK and has housed works by contemporary artists such as Fluer Grabow, Mary Feddon OBE, and James Donovan amongst a host of other luminaries.

I’m not the biggest fan of modern art but even I enjoy some of the interesting pieces on display at the Fosse, and with frequent guest exhibitions, there’s always something new to discover. The gallery is open from 10:30 am to 5 pm Monday to Saturday. Entrance is free; making this another of the great free things to do in Stow-on-the-Wold.

5. Shop at the Tara Antiques Centre

Stow is famed for its antique shops and people come here from all over the world looking for a bargain. The Tara Antiques Centre is one of the best places to visit in Stow-on-the-Wold if you’re looking for an interesting gift or souvenir to pick up. The center is located in the Grade II listed Manor House just off Market Square.

Here, you’ll find everything from fine silverware to jewelry, household items, and much more. I love browsing old antique shops and Tara is one of the best places in the country to do so, with over 30 antique dealers represented over three floors. 6. Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth at the Cotswold Sweet Company

If, like me, you love a sweat street now and again then you’ll want to head to the Cotswold Sweet Company in the center of town. Here, you’ll find a huge selection of homemade sweets, candies, toffees, and fudges (my favorite), and it’s the perfect place to pick up a taste of the Cotswolds.

You’ll find nostalgia with the selection of retro sweets, special gift hampers, sweet jars, chocolate bars, and even sugar-free candies. I could spend all day in this shop smelling the sweet aromas and spend a month’s wages on the different fudges and other delicious treats.

Browsing (and tasting) at the Cotswold Sweet Company is definitely one of the most fun things to do in Stow-on-the-Wold, especially if you have kids (young or old). The shop is open from 10:30 am until 5 pm Monday to Saturday and from 11 am until 4 pm on Sunday.

7. Visit Blenheim Palace, Home of the Churchills

Historic Blenheim Palace is a large country mansion that was built between 1705 and 1722. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of England’s finest examples of Baroque architecture. Blenheim is the ancestral home and birthplace of former British prime minister Sir Winston Churchill.

Visiting Blenheim is one of the best places to visit near Stow-on-the-Wold and is a must for history lovers like myself. You can explore the house and grounds, and there are plenty of events hosted at the palace throughout the year (check the website to see what’s going on during your stay).

The palace is open daily from 10 am until 4:45 pm. Tickets cost £22.50 for adults and £11.50 for children (the ticket is then valid for an entire year). There are lots of facilities onsite including a number of cafes and restaurants and a gift shop, making it a great day out for the entire family.

8. Go Hiking in the Nearby Countryside

The countryside around Stow is perfect for hiking thanks to the miles of trail across rolling hills and valleys. This is one of my favorite places to hike in the whole of the UK; mainly due to the gorgeous views (but also because of the quaint country pubs along the way). There are lots of routes from Stow ranging in difficulty from short walks to full-day and multi-day hikes.

The Heart of England circular walk is just 3.6 miles (5.8 km) and takes around 90 minutes. If you’re more of a seasoned hiker then you can go ahead and try the 7.7 mile (12.4 km) Stow-on-the-Wold to Upper Slaughter hike. This route takes around 4 hours and Upper Slaughter is well worth a visit for its gorgeous village scenes and River Eye.

Hiking is one of the best things to do around Stow-on-the-Wold thanks to the beautiful views from the high vantage points around the village.

9. Visit Medieval Sudeley Castle

The 15th Century stately home at Sudeley Castle is an excellent day out for the whole family. From guided tours of the house to getting lost in the beautiful gardens complete with mazes, orchards, and wildflower walks, there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained. There’s an onsite cafe called the Pavilion that sells some of the best cream teas and other homemade snacks in the Cotswolds – make sure you arrive with an appetite to try some of these!

The gardens are open daily from 10 am to 4 pm and the castle from 11 am to 4 pm. Tickets cost £19.50 for adults and £8.75 for children and include access to the house and grounds.

10. Shop for Local Produce at Daylesford Organic

Daylesford Organic Farm is just a short drive from Stow and makes for a great day out. Here you can eat and drink in the onsite cafes and restaurants, shop for organic produce in the farm shop, or walk around the stunning grounds in the heart of the Cotswolds.

The farm hosts regular events from food and drinks festivals to cookery workshops and is open from 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday and from 9 am to 6 pm on Sundays.

11. Take in the Fresh Air at Batsford Arboretum

The 56 acres of land at Batsoford Arboretum includes thousands of rare plants and trees from around the world. From snowdrops to bamboo, Japanese shrubs, and species from the rainforest, Batsford is the perfect place to experience some of the most stunning nature in the country.

The arboretum is located in the small market town of Moreton-in-Marsh just a few miles from Stow. The park is open from 9:30 am to 5 pm Monday to Saturday and from 10 am to 5 pm on Sundays. Tickets cost £9.95 for adults and £3.50 for children. This is definitely one of the best places to visit near Stow for the whole family and even features a play area for kids.

12. Visit Nearby Broadway

Broadway is another of the charming Cotswold villages and is famed for its large tower offering panoramic views of the nearby countryside. The village is also famed for its arts scene with lots of galleries and arts spaces, and an annual arts festival that takes place every June.

Broadway is just 12 miles (19 km) from Stow and takes under 30 minutes to drive. There are lots of pleasant walks around the village and through the 200-acre deer park. Nearby Snowshill Manor is worth a visit for its charming gardens, and plenty of great pubs to stop in – my favorite being The Swan.

13. Go to Chipping Norton

Chipping Norton is a quaint market town less than half an hour’s drive away and one of the best places to see near Stow-on-the-Wold. There are lots of wonderful things to do from exploring the bustling high street and its many shops to browsing the weekly farmers’ markets.

The town is the famous home of many celebrities from Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson to former prime minister David Cameron. There’s an outdoor swimming pool, an art space and theater, and lots of beautiful Cotswold architecture from the Almshouses to Bliss Tweed Mill and more.

The best way to get to Chipping Norton is to drive (follow the A44) as there aren’t any local buses for this route. Another great way to see the town and other highlights of the Cotswolds is to take a tour like this half-day tour from Oxford that also includes Bourton on the Water and other beautiful villages. 14. See the Stunning Village of Bibury

The charming village of Bibury is located in the heart of the Cotswolds, just 15 miles (24 km) from Stow-on-the-Wold. There are lots of fun things to do and the village is Known for its picturesque stone cottages and idyllic country scenes.

Bibury is home to many historic landmarks such as Arlington Row, a row of 17th-century cottages that have been beautifully preserved. I’ve been visiting the Cotswolds for years and Bibury is one of my favorite villages thanks to its picturesque cottages and charming location.

There are also some great places to eat and drink around Bibury from The Catherine Wheel pub to The Swan Brasserie, and the famous trout farm which has an onsite restaurant serving the freshest fish.

15. Take a Cotswold Walking Tour

This villages walking tour is an excellent way to experience Stow-on-the-Wold and other nearby villages like Broadway, Burford, and Bibury. You’ll get to explore sleepy villages and gorgeous, rolling countryside while learning something about the history of the area from an experienced guide.

While most tours of the Cotswolds are spent driving from place to place, this tour is different in that it focuses a lot more on walking. Getting to Stow-on-the-Wold, Cotswolds

The closest international airport to Stow is Birmingham Airport which is about an hour’s drive away. It’s best to rent a car if you wish to explore the Cotswolds further as public transport in this rural area isn’t comprehensive.

From London, it’s a two-hour drive along the M40. There aren’t any direct trains from the capital, however, the journey can be made in around two hours by taking the train from London Paddington to Kingham, and then taking a taxi for the final 5.6 miles (9 km) to Stow. Taking a Stow-on-the-Wold tour is also a great way to see Stow.

As it’s a small town, all the major attractions in Stow-on-the-Wold are within walking distance. However, to visit some of the nearby landmarks like Blenheim Palace and Batsford Arboretum it’s best to have your own transport or rent a car as public transportation isn’t great in this part of the country.

Known as El Jardin, this tree-lined plaza is surrounded by gorgeous buildings such as the parish church of San Miguel. Hanging out here easily tops the list of things to do in San Miguel de Allende. I spent some time there every day I was in town.

The square is bustling with activity in the evenings and at the weekend. You’ll see roaming mariachi bands, balloon salesmen, and plenty of snack vendors, making for a very lively scene.

If you ever get lost wandering the winding streets, just find your way back to the square and start all over again.

2. Take a Day Trip to Cañada de La Virgen

Not far from the city, you’ll find the massive nature preserve of Cañada de La Virgen. The highlight of a visit to this archaeological site is being able to explore the many pyramids.

There is a lot more to do here, including camping, horseback riding, and astronomy tours. While it’s possible to visit on your own, you’re better off signing up for a tour that includes lunch, all fees, and a guide.

This highly-rated experience is one you won’t want to miss and is one of the best day trips from San Miguel de Allende. I had a great time, and I highly recommend it.

3. Take a Look Inside the Church

Without a doubt, the emblem of San Miguel is the stunning La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel.

Its towering neo-Gothic façade is a true architectural masterpiece. It was built by the self-taught Zeferino Gutiérrez who is believed to have used postcards of European churches for inspiration.

While the outside of the church is absolutely breathtaking, be sure to go inside and have a look around as well.

In the chapel, you’ll be able to see the revered image of Cristo de la Conquista (Christ of the Conquest) as well as a beautiful painting depicting the founding of the city.

4. Visit the Botanical Garden

The perfect place to get out into some nature is the large botanical garden known as El Charco del Ingenio. Here you can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the many trails, do a bit of bird watching, or sit down for a picnic near a waterfall.

While many visitors to San Miguel de Allende spend much of their trip admiring the man-made beauty that abounds, you’ll want to carve out some time for nature as well.

5. Go on a Walking Tour

It’s fun wandering around the cobblestone streets of San Miguel de Allende on your own, but it’s even better when you’re accompanied by a knowledgeable guide.

Signing up for a walking tour of the city is definitely one of the best things to do in San Miguel de Allende. On this private experience, you’ll learn about the city, while visiting interesting places.

At the end of the experience, you’ll be given a list of the best restaurants and rooftop bars in San Miguel. In fact, this very tour is how I found out about some of the things to see in San Miguel de Allende that I’ll mention later in this article.

Walking tours typically meet in the center of the city and last around 2 hours. This is a great way to get your bearings in the city, meet new people, learn about San Miguel, and get some local recommendations for where to eat and drink.

6. Study Spanish

One of the most popular things to do in San Miguel de Allende is to sign up for Spanish lessons. There are plenty of excellent Spanish schools here and the locals are super friendly and ready to help you practice.

Ditch that bad gringo accent and improve your español here before travelling to other parts of Latin America.

7. Visit the Home of Ignacio Allende

One of the top things to do in San Miguel de Allende is to visit the home of Ignacio Allende, which is now the city’s history museum.

Did you know that San Miguel de Allende is actually named after two different people? The city gets its name from a friar named Juan de San Miguel and Ignacio Allende, a hero and martyr of the Mexican independence movement.

The Museo Historico is open from Tuesday to Sunday and only costs about $3 to visit. Spend an hour or so here and you’ll leave with a much better understanding of the city, its history, and its importance to the country.

8. Explore the Sanctuary of Atotonilco

Just a 30-minute drive from the centre, you’ll find the incredible Sanctuary of Atotonilco. A trip here is one of the best things to do around San Miguel de Allende.

This historic church complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is famous for its Mexican Baroque murals. The paintings are so beautiful, in fact, that it has been dubbed the “Sistine Chapel of Mexico.” 

The small, colourful town itself has a few buildings and food stalls, but there’s not much of interest here for tourists except the Sanctuary. Still, I found to be it well worth the trip.

9. Take a Walk to a Viewpoint (free things to do in San Miguel de Allende)

San Miguel de Allende looks amazing at street level, but it looks even better from above.

Thankfully it’s not too difficult to get a fantastic panoramic view of the city. It’s only about a 15-20 minute walk from the plaza up to the viewpoint, which is known as El Mirador.

Be sure to bring your camera with a full battery so you can snap some shots of this gorgeous city from this great vantage point. Add a hike up to the mirador to your list of things to do in San Miguel de Allende.

10. Visit Fabrica La Aurora

For nearly 100 years, Fabrica La Aurora was a textile mill in the north of San Miguel de Allende. These days, it’s a bustling collection of shops, galleries, and cafes that many refer to as a paradise for art lovers.

If you want to watch the artists at work, try to stop by on a Thursday for their Open Studio day. Check their website to see what’s going on and definitely be sure to include a stop here on your visit.

11. Experience a Local Festival

There are different festivals going on all throughout the year in San Miguel de Allende.

In fact, it’s known as a “fiesta town” because it loves to party! It seems like there’s always something fun happening here, whether it be a music festival or a traditional Mexican holiday.

There are famous storytelling and jazz festivals here each year, and there’s also the absolutely wild Dia de los Locos (Day of the Crazies). This is one of the best festivals in Mexico, so don’t miss it.

People get dressed up in all kinds of crazy costumes for a huge parade that’s tons of fun for all. This crazy day happens on the Sunday closest to June 13th, so plan accordingly.

12. Go Horseback Riding 

A great way to leave the city behind for a couple of hours and enjoy the countryside is to join a horseback riding trip. This is one of the more unusual things to do in San Miguel de Allende — most people only stay within the city center when they visit.

There are several different options for horseback riding adventures, but this one is a great choice. The trip will last around 2.5 hours and includes instructions, so anyone in reasonable physical shape can join.

13. Dive into the Art Scene

San Miguel de Allende has long been a favourite of artists, both established and aspiring. Walking around, you’ll quickly notice just how abundant art is in San Miguel.

There are museums, galleries, and institutes all over the city, including the famous Instituto Allende. There are several options here to unleash your inner artist, from one-day workshops to 4-week courses.

Even if you’re not into creating the art yourself, you’ll find plenty of eye-catching pieces to admire. Those interested in bringing some Mexican artwork home will find San Miguel de Allende a fantastic place to do some shopping.

14. Chill Out in a Cafe

One of my favourite things to do in San Miguel de Allende is to find a table in a local cafe and watch the city go by. Some of the best options include Lavanda Café, Cumpanio, and San Agustin for chocolate and churros.

With a nice boost of caffeine and sugar, you’ll be ready to continue your exploration of this famous Mexican city.

15. See a Show at the Theatre

A trip to the Angela Peralta Theatre is definitely one of the best things to do in San Miguel de Allende. Named after the queen of Mexican opera, this intimate theatre hosts a variety of performances from both local and visiting artists.

Be sure to check the calendar of events before your trip and grab some tickets to see a show here. One of the biggest events here is the International Jazz Festival, which takes place every year in November.

16. Relax in the Thermal Baths

If you’re wondering what to do in San Miguel de Allende after all that walking around and exploring, relaxing in a thermal bath is your best option. Kick back and relax!

There are several thermal baths near the town where you can go for a nice soak. The most popular choices are Escondido Place and La Gruta, both of which are easily combined with a trip to the Sanctuary of Atotonilco. I can’t tell you how much I appreciated a long soak after a hot day exploring the Sanctuary.

17. Eat Your Way Around the City

For such a small city, San Miguel de Allende sure packs a punch when it comes to the culinary scene. From street food up to fine dining and everything in between, your mouth is sure to be watering constantly as you eat your way across town.

There’s an abundance of delicious local food here, but that’s not all that the city is cooking up. You’ll also find plenty of awesome fusion restaurants as well as international cuisine to please the city’s large expat population.

While there are plenty of excellent shops and restaurants around the city, you should still make it a point to check out a local market for your shopping and/or eating needs. Besides stocking up on food, I also enjoy taking photographs (always ask first) and practicing my Spanish with the friendly vendors.

The Ignacio Ramírez market is a great place to pick up some fresh produce, grab a cheap lunch, or purchase some local handicrafts to take home.

19. Drinks With a View

After a big day of exploring all that San Miguel de Allende has to offer, the best way to wind down is with cocktails and a view at one of the city’s many rooftop bars.

You’ve got a few choices for your fancy Happy Hour, including the amazing Luna Rooftop Bar in the Rosewood Hotel.

They often have live music as well, making it an even more fun outing. Enjoying a tasty adult beverage with some live tunes and a lovely view of the city is definitely one of the top things to do in San Miguel de Allende.

Other great options are Quince and Cielo – both have great food, views and cocktails. 

20.  Fly High in a Hot Air Balloon

So you’ve already hiked up to the mirador and enjoyed some rooftop drinks, but if you’re looking for an even better view and one of the coolest things to do in San Miguel de Allende, why not go for a hot air balloon ride?

Fly high above the city in what is sure to be an unforgettable experience. It’s around $140 for a flight, and I thought it was worth every peso. Click here for details.

21. Party It Up in a Dive Bar

Fancy wine and cocktail joints are great and all, but you’ve got to hit an old-fashioned dive bar once in a while! If you’re looking for an unpretentious place with cheap drinks and good conversation, head to the rowdy La Cucaracha (The Cockroach).

There’s even a giant cockroach on the wall to make the place even more interesting. Fortunately I didn’t see any real ones the night I spent there.

15 Best Things to Do in Crete

I’ve been living on the island for over 5 years now, and have discovered all of the amazing places to visit in Crete, and the top sites and attractions. It’s not only my favorite place in Greece, but easily one of my favorite places in the whole world!

This list featuring 15 unique things to do on the island will certainly help you decide why you need to visit Crete at least once in your lifetime — it really is one of the top places to see in Greece. 

Here’s my list of the top 15 things to do in Crete, Greece.

1. Discover the Beautiful Beaches

There are several beaches that you can explore in Crete, Greece. I’ve made it my mission to dip my toes in the sea from all of them.

Three of Crete’s most famous beaches are in the region of Chania — visit them all or choose the one that best suits your holiday style. Some of the top beaches in Greece are found in Crete, so don’t miss them.

Balos Beach and Lagoon

Balos Beach is located towards the end of the Gramvousa Peninsula, about one hour drive from Chania.

If you prefer to skip the road to Balos, which is mostly a dirt track next to a steep hill overlooking the sea, it’s a good idea to book a day cruise departing from the nearby harbour of Kissamos.

A day cruise will not only take you to Balos but also to the close-by island of Imeri Gramvousa.

The beach of Balos is one of the most exotic places on the island. The crystal waters form a shallow lagoon that is surrounded by a harsh mountain landscape of striking contrast against the turquoise seas.

The beach is well organized although there’s just one canteen on the beach. If you’re on a budget, I’d suggest you pack your lunch so as to save some money. 

No matter whether you visit Balos by car or boat, don’t overlook how merciless the sun can be in Crete. Carry enough water with you and high SPF sunscreen lotion.

Pink Sand Beach of Elafonisi

Elafonisi Beach is another spectacular place to visit in Crete. It’s a worldwide famous shore known for its fantastic pink sand, but also for a fairly calm sea with alluring shades of blue.

The shore is wide and although it can be really packed in summer, there’s always enough space for everyone.

Elafonisi is about 70 km south from Chania, and although there are buses going there from Chania’s central station, the best way to get there is by car.

To reach Elafonisi, you can drive through the gorge of Topolia or combine the trip with a stop on Crete’s third famous beach, Falasarna, driving along the coastal road. For those of you who don’t have a vehicle, join this highly rated trip to Elafonisi Beach.

Falasarna Beach 

The wide shores of Falasarna are on the west coast of Crete and it’s the best place on Crete to enjoy the sunset. The village is small and relaxing, with not many things to do, but I always have a good time there anyway.

The main reason to visit Falasarna is the spectacular bay and the ideal weather conditions that make it a perfect place to practice windsurfing and other water sports.

There are a few beach bars and restaurants serving basic dishes and cold drinks, so you don’t need to pack a lunch if you plan to spend your day in Falasarna.

2. Stroll the Alleys of Chania’s Old Town

The old town of Chania has often been described as Crete’s prettiest city, and for good reason! The old town is home to an elegant Venetian quarter, a romantic old port, a beautiful Egyptian lighthouse, and much more.

A great way to get to know the city when you first arrive is to join this walking tour with a local guide. During the experience, you’ll discover hidden areas, fantastic restaurants and learn about Chania and the island of Crete. Learn more about this affordable, highly-rated trip here.

The Venetian district of Chania’s old town is the perfect place to admire the stunning urban landscape of the city. You can also visit the old Jewish neighbourhood of Zudecca which is home to a Synagogue dating from the 15th century.

On the seaside area, you can step into the Ottoman past of the island by visiting the small Mosque of the Janissaries, one of Chania’s best-known landmarks with its typical pink domes and arches. 

At night, you can dine in any of the several tavernas that line up along the Venetian Arsenals. This is the perfect spot to enjoy a sunset while sipping a glass of the local Vidiano white wine (my personal favorite).

Also known as the New Marina, the Arsenals are a great place to experience the unique flavors of Crete.

Choose Salis for a refined dining experience with products coming directly from the producers and the restaurant’s own winery.

If you’re on a budget, instead, go for a round of local meze (small Greek dishes) in Faka. The views of the harbour are equally inspiring in both venues. 

To end the day, have a cocktail in Pallas, right in front of the lighthouse. There you can listen to some music and engage in conversation with the friendly locals.

3. Catch a Ferry to Loutro (One of the best things to do in Crete)

Taking the ferry to small fishing village of Loutro is one of the top Crete activities, both for the destination and the trip to get there. Every time I do it, I’m astounded by how gorgeous the surroundings are.

One of the most scenic drives in the region of Chania is the one that takes you all the way down to the southern village of Chora Sfakion, passing through the impressive gorge of Imbros. Once in Chora Sfakion, reach the port and board a ferry to spend a day or even two in Loutro.

If you’re an experienced hiker or simply just love adventures, you can also reach Loutro by hiking the coastal mountain trail that connects Chora Sfakion to the village. On your way, you can stop and swim in the wonderful hidden beaches of Illingas or Glyka Nera.

There’s not much to do in Loutro, but that’s the beauty of it.

Loutro is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a peaceful holiday, and it’s not unusual for day-trippers to change their mind on the spot and book a stay once they’re there.

You can swim in the emerald green waters and enjoy the simple but tasty local cuisine served in any of the seaside tavernas. My favorite has always been Notos, specializing in seafood but also catering to vegetarians. Their prices are also very budget-friendly.

4. Explore the Local History in Arkadi Monastery

Arkadi Monastery is the most important spiritual center of Crete. It’s a place loved by the locals not only for the beauty of the church and the gardens but especially because of the key role it played during the times of the Ottoman occupation of the island.

The Holocaust of Arkadi is an important event in the past of the island. About 900 people – mostly kids and women – chose to take their own lives rather than surrender to the Turks.

These events did not lead to the immediate liberation of the island but did start a process of international support which, by 1898, finally put an end to 267 years of oppressing ottoman ruling on the island.

Arkadi Monastery is one of the many monasteries of Crete. It is about 25 minutes away from the city of Rethymnon, and if you’re a real fan of local history, it could be a great day trip if combined with a visit to the Archaeological Site of Eleftherna and its museum.

5. Admire the Turkish Architecture in the Old Town of Rethymnon

One more great thing to do in Crete is to pay a visit to the old town of Rethymnon. This is one of the first spots I take my out-of-town visitors so they can get an idea of what to see in Crete beyond the most famous places.

Rethymnon is not just a gorgeous Venetian town with a picturesque port and a maze of cobblestone alleys, it’s also the place where the rest of the Turkish past of the island is better preserved and easy to discover.

In the town, it’s a good idea to explore the fantastic Venetian mansions with wooden balconies in perfect Turkish style. You’ll also find high minarets, such as the Valide Sultana minaret and the one in the Mosque of Neratzes.

However, the most imposing mosque in town can be visited inside the Fortezza, the imposing Venetian fortress that faces the Sea of Crete.

Once you’re done exploring, you can enjoy lunch or dinner in the old town.

For a quick and light lunch, choose Raki BaRaki for the endless choice of meze. For a more refined meal, Avli is one of Crete’s most famous restaurants. It has a beautiful herb garden and one of Greece’s best wine lists.

6. Go Wine Tasting

It’s impossible to visit Crete and not come across one of the over 50 wineries that populate the villages of the island. Most wineries are open to the public and produce fantastic wines from 12 different grape varieties that grow only on Crete.

The region of Rethymno is home to Crete’s star grape, Vidiano, which produces one of the best white wine labels of Crete. One of the wineries open to the public in Rethymno is Klados, a boutique producer with just 6 labels worth trying.

For a fun day trip out, join this experience which includes transport, olive oil tasting, lunch, and drinks (5 different wines, raki, and limoncello). 

In Chania, you should make a point to visit Manousakis winery, which isn’t far from the center. If you’re driving to catch that ferry to Loutro, you can check Dourakis winery, on the way to Sfakia.

Heraklion, however, is the most important wine region of Crete. Have a look at this fun experience which includes a 3-course meal with wine.

Lyrarakis winery is one of the most traditional places to visit in Crete. You can enjoy a small wine tasting session with a few labels and local cheese, or enjoy a complete meal with a total wine tasting experience.

There are some great wine tours that you can join in Crete, many of which include food as well. Drinking and driving isn’t safe, and by joining a tour, not only will you be able to drink as much as you want, but you’ll meet some great people along the way.

7. Enjoy the Food and Scenery of Argyroupolis

Halfway between Rethymnon and Chania, Argyroupolis is a very special little town that lies surrounded by green valleys, high mountains, and natural springs.

The green landscape is an inviting atmosphere for an afternoon away from the sea, to see a completely different side of the island.

Argyropoulis is famous among locals because it serves one of the island’s best-known dishes, goat on the spit. However, many visit the village for a different food treat.

In Argyroupolis, it’s also possible to eat fresh grilled trout. In fact, not many people are aware of the fact that, despite being an island, the protein of choice is not always fish.

On Crete, fish is mostly for tourists while locals prefer lamb or goat. For great fish, Argyroupolis is the answer.

8. Explore Ancient Knossos

No visit to Crete is complete without paying a visit to the Minoan Palace of Knossos, about 11 km from the capital of Crete, Heraklion.

Knossos is one of the most-visited archaeological sites in Greece. Comparable to the Parthenon in Athens, it’s also one of the biggest archaeological ruins of Europe.

The Minoan civilization flourished on the island over 3000 years ago, especially during the Bronze Age, and engaged in trading with other important Mediterranean cultures.

Inside the palace, you can admire unique buildings, storage rooms, and genius engineering inventions, including complex piping systems to provide fresh water to the inhabitants, prevent floods, and flush their toilets.

After checking out the archaeological site, head back to the center of Heraklion to explore the Archaeological Museum. It will shed new light on your recent visit to Knossos, putting everything into perspective.

You will be able to admire the intricate quality of the objects discovered in the archaeological site, currently exhibited in the museum.

The best way to visit Knossos is to book a guided visit. This will bring the site to life, plus you’ll be able to skip the long lines and save a lot of time.

9. Nightlife in Malia

Malia is a lively seaside town on the northern coast of Heraklion, with a beautiful beach and a great variety of pubs, beach bars, and a few discos to dance the night away.

Those who travel to Crete expecting an exciting nightlife scene should maybe reconsider. Crete is not a crazy party island unless you visit Malia.

However, there’s more to Malia than crazy evenings on the dance floor. If you’re like me, you come for the party, but stay for the history.

The village was also an important Minoan settlement in ancient times, and today you can devote some hours to visiting the Minoan Palace of Malia, just a few meters from the Sea of Crete.

10. Swim in the Hippie Beach of Matala 

The southern coast of the region of Heraklion is famous all over the world for Matala. Matala has been a well-known hippie meeting point since the early sixties, and it was one of the first places where ex-pats would go back to them.

They were not digital nomads, but they were definitely the first expression of modern nomadism and rebellion against the norms. When I lay out my beach towel in Matala, I always feel like I’m part of this long tradition.

The hippies of Matala lived for months in the mountain caves that stand right next to the beach, living a simple life free from stress — a unique vibe that this small coastal town managed to maintain through the years.

These caves in the rock are one of the more unique things to see in Crete.

Despite being one of Crete’s tourist hot spots, Matala is a tranquil resort to spend a few days disconnecting from the rest of the world. Click here for a day trip to this unique spot. 

11. Go Village Hopping Around the Lasithi Plateau

Once you’ve explored the central region of Heraklion, drive to Lasithi, Crete’s easternmost region and the place that best treasures Crete’s mountain tradition.

Probably the most authentic thing to do in eastern Crete is to drive around the traditional villages of the Lasithi Plateau. Some of them are so small that you’ll need just a couple of minutes to see them.

The plateau is a wonderful green extension, where locals cultivate different kinds of fruits and vegetables, the tavernas cook and serve authentic homemade meals, and the mountain landscape is truly inspiring.

A must stop in the Lasithi Plateau is the small village of Psychro, known for the imposing Cave of Zeus, an ancient Minoan place of worship.

According to different legends, Greece’s most important god, Zeus, was not just born on Crete, but he was also raised inside this cave.

12. Hike the Gorge of Richtis

Forget the extremely busy Samaria Gorge, the Gorge of Richtis is one of Crete’s lesser-known walking paths along a small stream. This is one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Crete and one of my favorite swimming holes and hiking spots. 

Not everything is about mountain villages in the east. Along the coastal road that takes you from Heraklion to Sitia, you will find this fantastic natural place to visit that will certainly leave you in awe.

After about an hour hike through the green landscape, it takes you through a tiny but refreshing waterfall, and from there to a beautiful beach on the northern coast of the islands.

To hike the path you need to access the entrance of the gorge by car, and leave it before starting the hike, right next to the parking spot.

The beach is not organized, so take everything you might need, including a beach towel and cold drinks. After the hike, a swim at Richtis beach will be more than welcome.

13. Sunbathe on the Palm Tree Beach of Vai

The beach of Vai is famous for being home to one of Europe’s largest date palm tree groves. It’s located in a protected bay, well-protected from strong winds and sea currents, and the area has amenities such as restaurants, showers, and lifeguards.

The extreme east of Crete has some of the most beautiful beaches on the island, and Vai is one of the best. Anywhere close to the sea you drive in the region of Lasithi will offer spectacular scenic views and some of the cleanest beaches of Crete, most of them usually empty, since the area is considered to be quite remote.

Those of you who would rather swim in a more isolated beach will find a good alternative just 5 km away from Vai. The hidden beach of Itanos is another wonderful shore on the east coast, just beneath ancient Dorian ruins.

The place is truly spectacular during sunset. To best visit the east, I suggest you chose a place to stay in the nearby city of Sitia or in Agios Nikolaos.

14. Taste the Strong Local Spirit: Raki

You might be wondering what raki is. Well, chances are that raki is the first (or close second!) thing you taste on the island. Let me explain…

Raki (also known as tsikoudia) is a strong, homemade spirit with high alcohol content. It’s served as a complimentary treat after every meal usually together with fresh fruit or another sweet delicacy.

However, raki is much more than just a drink. It’s a welcoming expression of hospitality typical of the island, and it can also be enjoyed before lunch, with a round of olives and acts as a fantastic starter for any meal.

15. Taste the Unique Cretan Cuisine in an Authentic Mountain Village

As I’ve already said, the best way to see the hidden places of Crete is by renting a car and driving around the island.

Driving in Crete is not really that difficult and it allows you to go through spots that you wouldn’t have imagined existed. Besides, it’s impossible to access some of these places using local public transport.

While driving around, you don’t want to miss the most authentic cuisine.

Of course, you’ll be able to taste the well-known Greek gyros while visiting the most important cities, but lunch in a mountain village will be a completely genuine experience of flavor and hospitality.

Just stop whenever you see a small taverna, you will be told the specials of the day and, trust me, no matter what you choose, you will be amazed at the fresh ingredients and unique taste of homemade olive oil, abundant herbs, and the tender meats.

And if you’re a vegetarian, there’s no need to worry, the Cretan diet offers an endless variety of greens and vegetables baked in pies, cooked in tomato sauce, or simply prepared with olive oil, sea salt, and lemon.

If you’re interested in American history, there’s perhaps no better city to visit than Philadelphia. It was here that the founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence and created a new nation in 1776.

I spent my younger years living in Philly with my family and have fond memories of the city. I’ve been back several times over the years and discover something new every time. Now, I’m excited to share some insights into one of my favorite American cities with you in this post.

Weekend in Philadelphia: The Perfect 2 Day Itinerary

With 2 days in Philadelphia, you can visit some of the most important historical sights in the country, watch a professional sports game, peruse public markets, check out the excellent museums, go bar-hopping or stuff your face with cheesesteaks!

For outdoor enthusiasts, there’s the scenic Penn’s Landing and the massive Fairmont Park. Depending on the time of year, you can enjoy hiking, kayaking, cycling, ice-skating, and more.

Let’s get to it and see what you can get up to with a weekend in Philadelphia!

Day 1 in Philadelphia

With just two days in Philadelphia, you’ll want to get out there and make the most of your short time. For the first day, we’ll focus on the city’s rich history and dabble in the culinary and nightlife scenes.

Morning

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and that’s definitely true when you have a big day of exploring a new city ahead of you!

Breakfast

One place I recommended for breakfast is FRIEDA, a European-style cafe with a killer weekend brunch menu.

If you’d rather just grab a cup of coffee and something light to start the day, La Colombe Coffee Roasters and Old City Coffee Inc. are both solid choices.

With a full belly and a nice caffeine buzz, you’re ready for a big day in Philly.

Visit Independence Hall

Start your journey back in time by visiting Independence Hall, also known as “America’s birthplace.” You can’t miss this place during your 2 days in Philadelphia, and it’s a destination I return to again and again.

Both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed in this historic building. One could make the case that it’s the most important building in the history of the United States!

To visit Independence Hall, you’ll need to jump on a guided tour. These run every day of the year except Christmas from 9 AM-5 PM. They’re totally free if you sign up in the visitor’s center. You can also reserve online in advance for a $1 fee.

The hall is actually just one part of a much larger national historical park. There’s lots more to see here, including the famous Liberty Bell.

This gift to the US from Great Britain arrived way back in 1752. It cracked, had to be reformed, and then cracked again. The bell has remained silent ever since!

If you’re wondering where the name comes from, it’s because of the quote that is etched into the side: “Proclaim Liberty throughout the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.”

Afternoon

How you decide to spend your first afternoon on a weekend in Philadelphia depends largely on your interests and the weather. Here are some suggestions:

See Some Museums

Should you want to keep the history lesson rolling and/or experience inclement weather, there are lots of museums to choose from in the Old City.

• There’s the National Constitution Center, which is an interactive museum that’s fun and informative for all ages. Tickets cost $14.50 and include a screening of the inspiring “Freedom Rising.” Head to their website to read all about the various exhibits.
• Another great option in the area is the Benjamin Franklin Museum. Here you can learn all about one of the most influential Americans through five different rooms, each focused on a different character trait of his. Tickets cost just $5 for this excellent museum!
• There’s also the Museum of the American Revolution, which features in-depth exhibits about this pivotal time in the nation’s history. Tickets cost $21 and you can buy them online here. (This museum is also included in the Sightseeing Pass).

Lunch Break

For lunch, in keeping with the day’s historic theme, you can pop into City Tavern. Order off their 18th-century inspired menu in this classic restaurant where the founding fathers once dined.

Visit Penn’s Landing

Walk a few blocks to Penn’s Landing. Located on the Delaware River, this is the place to be on a nice summer day.

Enjoy a stroll along the tree-lined promenade or go out for some fun on the river. It’s possible to rent kayaks and paddleboats or you can just hop on the ferry over to New Jersey to enjoy the views of the skyline.

During the summer months, Penn’s Landing frequently show movies and have concerts. I wouldn’t personally recommend spending 2 days in Philadelphia in the winter, but if you do, you can go ice skating here.

Join a Segway Adventure

Another fun way to see a lot of the city in a short time is by hopping on a 2-hour Segway adventure. Cruise along the river, pass through historic districts, and explore a bit of Philly’s Chinatown. Tours run at 12:30 and 3 and cost $55.

Evening

After a huge day, it’s time to celebrate a little! This is a beer-loving city, so sampling a few of the local suds definitely needs to be on your list of things to do during 2 days in Philadelphia.

Beer, Brewery and Food Experiences

On this Philly beer tasting experience and tour, you’ll get to visit some of the most unique bars in the city. This includes full beers at each place, and snacks.

Those interested in brewing may want to check out this highly rated brewery experience. You’ll learn all about the brewing process and history and get to sample different craft beers (generous samples!).

If you’re more interested in a food tour during your weekend in Philly, check out this highly-rated food tour, which includes eating like a local at 5 different places. Come hungry as you’ll do lots of eating on the 2.5-hour tour!

If you just want to do your own thing, I recommend starting out with a drink at the outdoor Independence Beer Garden. They have an excellent Happy Hour menu as well as some reasonably priced all-you-can-drink packages if you’re really looking to party!

For a more swanky atmosphere, there’s the Stratus Rooftop Lounge. Located atop the Hotel Monaco, this is the place to see and be seen in downtown Philly.

Watch a Professional Sports Game

As I mentioned in the introduction, this is a city that absolutely loves sports. Philadelphia is home to the Eagles (NFL), 76ers (NBA), Flyers (NHL), and Phillies (MLB), so there’s always a game going on.

Check the calendar to see if one of the home teams is playing during your weekend in Philadelphia! Seeing a major sporting event in this city full of passionate fans is definitely an experience.

Day 2 in Philadelphia

Hopefully you didn’t go too hard on night one, but that’s totally understandable if you did. Philly is definitely a fun city to visit on the weekends!

Since there’s too much to do here to cram it all into one weekend, I’ll give you a few different options for how to spend your 2nd day in the city.

Morning

Start your day with a combination of history and donuts! These are two of my favorite things to enjoy during a weekend in Philly.

Visit the Market

A great way to start the day is on a trip to Reading Terminal Market. As is the case with so many places in Philly, there’s a lot of history here.

The market has been operating since way back when in 1893, making it one of the oldest public markets in the country. It almost had to shut down in the ’70s but thanks to a boost in public funding it was saved.

There are around 80 merchants here including several bakeries and restaurants, so you can easily find something for breakfast.

Donuts for Breakfast!

One of the best places in Reading Terminal Market is Beiler’s Bakery for their scrumptious donuts.

If you’re not that into the market but still want your fill of Homer Simpson’s favorite dish, head to Federal Donuts instead.

For the ultimate donut experience, check out this awesome tour. It’s called the Philadelphia underground donut tour and it’s as fun and delicious as it sounds.

Get Some Exercise (“Rocky” Style)

After you’ve satisfied your craving for fried dough, it’s time to work it off with a little exercise — Philly style! One must-do on any weekend in Philadelphia itinerary is running up the famed “Rocky” steps to the art museum.

Get pumped up by putting on “Eye of the Tiger” and doing a bit of air-boxing and then run up the steps just like Stallone did in the movie. Is it a super touristy thing to do? It sure is. Should you still do it? Of course!

Those who are really into the classic film and want to take it to the next level can check out this Rocky movie locations tour. You’ll travel to four different sights that were used in the series, including the Italian Market.

Visit the Art Museum

If you’re going to run up all those stairs, you might as well go into the Philadelphia Museum of Art at the top. It has a massive collection and is one of the best art museums I’ve ever been to.

Tickets for the museum cost $25. Click here to book them online before you go. You can easily spend the whole day here so you’ll have to move quickly if you want to see all the rooms.

Afternoon

You’ll be hungry again after climbing all the stairs and exploring the museum. Time to grab some lunch.

Lunch Break

No Philadelphia weekend trip would be complete without sampling the city’s iconic sandwich — the cheesesteak. There are tons of places to try it, but first-timers should go try out the original.

Pat’s King of Steaks claims to be the inventor of the famous sandwich, which is made with thinly sliced steak and melted cheese on a roll.

American and provolone cheese are both common, but the most popular choice is Cheese Wiz. That’s right, the gooey, cheese-like substance that really isn’t cheese at all. Hey, it’s delicious!

Right across the street is their biggest rival, Geno’s. It’s kind of like the Coney dog challenge in my hometown of Detroit. You’ll just have to try them both and see which one you think is best. Good thing you’ll have 2 days in Philadelphia to try one on each day.

Explore the Magic Gardens

After all that meat, cheese, and bread, you might need a walk. Good thing it’s just 15 minutes to the next destination on the Philadelphia itinerary, the Magic Gardens.

It’s the brainchild of Isaiah Zagar, an award-winning mosaic mural artist and native Philadelphian. Known as an “immersive mixed media art environment,” it’s a stunning place to visit.

Go on a Walking Tour

The tour visits many of the places I’ve covered so far and also includes a beer in a local brewpub. Tours run at 11:30, 2:30 and 5:30 and cost $45.

Evening

Unless you decide to join the walking tour, wrap up a big weekend in Philadelphia with a stroll along the hip South Street.

Wander Around South Street

South Street It’s the perfect place to do a bit of window shopping and snap photos of vibrant street art.

There are so many choices for restaurants along South Street that it’s kind of overwhelming. You can find cuisine from all over the map here, from Thailand to Morocco and everywhere in between.

South Street is also home to a wide variety of bars, from classic Irish pubs and hookah lounges to hipster bars with names like Tattooed Mom. It’s easy to choose your own adventure and have a fun night out here, especially on the weekend.

Listen to Live Music

If you were hoping to squeeze some live music into your 2 days in Philadelphia, you can see what’s playing at the Theater of Living Arts. Another option is the nearby Twisted Tail, which usually has live blues and also has an open jam session on Sunday.

Whatever you decide to do, give yourself a pat on the back and order up your favorite drink. You’ve earned it for completing this massive itinerary for a Philadelphia weekend trip!

Insider Tips for 2 Days in Philadelphia

Following this weekend itinerary will guarantee a good time in Philly. You’ll have an even better time if you follow these tips as well:

Diet later. Spending a weekend in Philadelphia is best when it includes the finer things in life, like cheesesteaks, donuts, and craft beer. Save that diet for after your trip and enjoy yourself. The quinoa will still be there when you get back.

Walk or use public transport. Philadelphia is one of the most walkable cities in the US. Getting around on foot ensures you take in the surroundings and also burn off some of those calories! You can see a lot with long walks during 2 days in Philadelphia.

When your feet get tired, the city has a pretty solid public transportation system. For just a 2 day trip, you can rely mostly on the Philly PHLASH Downtown Loop bus, which costs just $2 per ride.

Skip the winter. I grew up between Detroit and Philly and lived in Beijing, so I’m no stranger to cold weather. If you’re traveling to the city for the first time and are looking to enjoy yourself, I recommend giving winter a hard pass. Philly is much more enjoyable when you can walk between attractions and enjoy the riverfront.

Go to a ballgame. I know I mentioned this a few times already but it’s worth repeating — Philly is a sports city. It’s a big part of the local culture and something you should experience, even if you’re not a huge fan.

Drink local. It should come as no surprise that a city that loves its sports team also loves beer. Don’t come to Philly and order a Heineken or a Corona. Go with the local stuff instead. I recommend reading up on the craft beer trail before traveling there.

Getting to Philadelphia

Most travelers will arrive at the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). It’s located 7 miles (11 km) from downtown and there are several options for traveling there.

By Rail

The regional rail network known as SEPTA provides an efficient and economical way to travel downtown from the airport. It only takes 25 minutes to get there and trains run every half hour.

A one-way ticket costs $8 if you buy it on board but just $6.75 if you book in advance.

By Taxi

Taxis are also readily available at the airport. It’s a flat-rate charge of $32 to Center City, where you’ll likely be staying for your weekend in Philadelphia.

Rideshare

Both Uber and Lyft also operate at the airport and are also good options for getting around the city during your 2 days in Philadelphia.

By Train or Bus

If you’re already traveling in the US, especially from other big cities on the East Coast, you can easily get to Philly by train or bus. The city is a major hub for Amtrak on the Northeast Corridor and Keystone lines.

There are trains coming into Philadelphia from Washington DC and New York every hour during the day, for example. They arrive at the 30th Street Station and you can transfer to the SEPTA for free to get to Center City.

Several companies also operate bus routes in and out of Philly, including Greyhound, BoltBus, and Megabus. I only have experience with the latter, traveling in from Pittsburgh and out to NYC. Tickets can be super cheap if you book well in advance.

Best Places to Stay for a Weekend in Philadelphia

With just a weekend, you’ll want to maximize your time spent enjoying the city and minimize time spent moving around. The best way to do that is by staying in either the Old City or Center City area.

They’re right next to each other and either one puts you in close proximity to the best sights like Independence Hall and Penn’s Landing. It’s also super easy to come and go from the airport or train station, making your travel days less stressful.

Being in the center of Philadelphia also means you’ll be spoiled for choices when it comes to shopping, dining, and nightlife. You also have plenty of options for accommodation.

Here are a few of the best to suit all budgets:

• Mid-Range: Aloft Philadelphia Downtown
• Luxury: Le Meridien

If you want to be near the action but not quite in the middle of it, you can look to neighboring areas such as Logan Square or Society Hill.

The best Greek beaches are some of the most unique on the planet and are stunning to behold. There are numerous places to visit in Greece, but the Greek islands are a place where modern-day luxury and ancient history walk hand in hand.

And, if you travel smart, Greece can be a great budget travel destination.

Greek beaches are some of the more popular destinations to visit in Europe, and are definitely one of my favorite places to spend the summer months.

To avoid the inevitable arguments about which should be number one and how this beach is better than that one, this list is in random order. So, from golden sand and crystal clear waters to wave-sculpted rock, here are the nicest beaches in Greece you won’t want to miss!

Here’s my list of the the top 15 best beaches in Greece.

1. Porto Katsiki, Lefkada

First on the list is Porto Katsiki, which roughly translated means goat port. This is because at one time only goats could reach the shore by scrambling down the treacherous cliffs.

These days, however, Porto Katsiki has opened up and stairs run down from a parking lot at the top of the cliff.

Located on the Ionian Island of Lefkada, during the day boat tours also drop tourists on the sands from the nearby town of Nidri. The best time to visit is early in the morning, at around 8 am, as the beach soon fills up with tourists. Although a major hotspot for travellers, you should still make time to see Porto Katsiki.

There are no hotels or places to stay near the beach and also it is prohibited to camp. There are however some small restaurants on the cliffs where it is possible to get food and drinks.

How to Get to Porto Katsiki

The beach is located on the southernmost peninsula of Lefkada Island and can be reached from most towns either by bus or taxi. It is also possible to take a boat tour, where Porto Katsiki is one of the main stops.

Being one of the most famous beaches in the Greek Islands, this is a very easy spot to reach. Porto Katsiki is a stunning place and easily makes the list of the best beaches in Greece.

2. Elafonisi, Crete

Next up is the beautiful Elafonisi Beach which is located on its namesake, Elafonisi Island. With its pink sand and warm waters, this is one of the most famous beaches in the Greek Islands.

Situated off the southwest corner of the Island of Crete, on calm days it is possible to wade through the shallow waters between Crete and Elafonisi, to reach the beach.

The island itself is a protected nature reserve so is lovely and clean. However, as the day draws on the beach does get quite crowded. Arrive early to relax and see the beach in all of its beauty. Afterwards head out and enjoy the rest of the top things to do in Crete to avoid the crowds.

Windsurfing is also possible in the area, so if you like extreme sports this is the perfect destination for you. During the summer months, the conditions are perfect to surf almost every day.

How to Get to Elafonisi Beach

Elafonisi is a small island tethered to the Cretan mainland by a ribbon of sand. The best way to reach Elafonisi Beach is by taxi from the nearby city, Chania.

If you are traveling on a budget however, there are also frequent buses that can drop you at the beach. Although, do keep in mind that the buses will take a lot longer than a taxi.

3. Koukounaries, Skiathos

Skiathos is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, and Koukounaries is just one more of the Greek Islands’ spectacular stretches of sand. Koukounaries Beach is famous for its fine white sand and fragrant pine forest, from which the area took its name.

Since the 1960’s the island has been a protected reserve, which has helped to made Koukounaries Beach one of the most unspoiled in all of the Mediterranean. The crystal clear waters of the lagoon are deep and perfect for those looking for a good place to swim.

Koukounaries Beach offers many activities from watersports to nature walks through the pine forest. This is not only the best beach on Skiathos, it is one of the best beaches in Greece.

How to Get to Koukounaries Beach

The Island of Skiathos lies off the coast of mainland Greece, east of the Pelion peninsula. Koukounaries is on the southwestern corner of Skiathos.

The region around the beach is well catered for tourists, offering many restaurants, beach hotels and bars. Local buses circle the island for most of the day, with Koukounaries being one of the main drop off points.

4. St Paul’s Bay, Rhodes

St Paul’s Bay is a picturesque piece of Rhodes. Situated just south of Lindos, it is said this is where the Apostle Paul landed during a heavy storm. There is a small church built on the hill to commemorate the landing, which today has become a popular wedding location due to the stunning scenery around the bay.

St Paul’s Bay is one of the best swimming locations on the Island of Rhodes, sheltered by the arms of the cove. The bay is home to two beaches. The larger one is on the southern shore and is made of golden sand. The beach laying on the northern shore is a mix of sand and gravel.

The bay is also well-known for snorkeling and diving due to the calm waters and is a great place to take young children. Visit in any month other than August and you will also find St Paul’s Bay relatively uncrowded.

How to Get to St Paul’s Bay

St Paul’s Bay is on the east coast of the Island of Rhodes near the town of Lindos. The bay is around fifty kilometers from Rhodes city and is quite easy to reach.

It is possible to take a bus from the city straight to the bay, with a journey time of around 1h 40 mins. A taxi is the fastest option however, taking approximately 50 mins.

5. Lalaria, Skiathos

The secluded and beautiful Lalaria Beach is only accessible by taking a boat from Skiathos town. Also due to it being exposed to the northerly winds, can only be visited when the waters are calm.

With its white sandy beaches and spectacular cliffs rising out of the waters, Lalaria Beach possesses a dreamlike beauty.

This is one of the more unique beaches in the Greek Islands, unlike all of the others on this list. Due to the constant barrage of waves in the area, sea caves have been formed in the vicinity of the beach. By taking a small boat, it is possible to get up close and sail inside some of the larger ones.

If you’re an adventurous soul, this is the best beach in Greece for you.

How to Get to Lalaria Beach

Situated on the northeastern tip of Skiathos, as stated, Lalaria Beach can only be reached by boat. Both boats and sea taxis are available from the harbour in Skiathos town.

However, due to the strong afternoon winds, tourist boats only visit in the mornings. If you take a sea taxi, they will drop you off and then return later to pick you up. Even though your visit will only be a short one, Lalaria Beach is still definitely worth the visit.

6. Myrtos, Kefalonia (by far one of the best beaches in Greece!)

You may have seen Myrtos Beach in the movie Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, where the beach played a starring role. As you can see from the picture, this is one of the Greek Islands’ most beautiful beaches. If you climb the peninsula to the north of Myrtos Beach, you will be rewarded with some stunning views.

Myrtos Beach is constantly mentioned in travel magazines as being one of the best beaches in Greece. With its high surrounding hills and beautiful turquoise waters, this is one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, and possibly anywhere.

This westward-facing beach also offers some incredible sunset views making the natural beauty of Myrtos unrivaled in the whole of the Greek Islands. There are numerous things to do in Kefalonia, but this should be number 1 on your list.

How to Get to Myrtos Beach

Myrtos Beach is the main attraction on Kefalonia Island and is located 30 kilometers north of the main town Argostoli. The beach is easily accessible by all means of transport and also offers amazing views when descending to the beach. Buses leave regularly from Argostoli taking approximately 1h 20 mins.

7. Sarakiniko, Milos

Sarakiniko Beach is a series of coves carved out of volcanic rock. It’s another of the Greek Islands’ stunningly unique beaches.

Whipped by both the wind and sea, the volcanic rock has been formed into otherworldly shapes which will have you thinking that you are walking on the moon itself.

The white rocks of Sarakiniko Beach have no vegetation, which makes the contrast of the clear blue waters more appealing. Normally Sarakiniko Beach is a quiet spot with only a few tourists. Find your own little cove and have a swim.

If you are looking for a beach with character, there are few that can match Sarakiniko. This alone makes it one of the best Greek beaches.

How to Get to Sarakiniko Beach

Sarakiniko Beach is on the island of Milos in the Aegean Sea. Located halfway between Athens and Crete, the island can be reached by air and also by ferry. Once there, make your way to the northern shore of the island where Sarakiniko Beach is waiting.

Milos is a small island and most of the towns are located near the north shore making Sarakiniko Beach very easy to reach.

8. Matala Beach, Crete

Matala Beach is a place steeped in history. From the ancient Minoans and Gortynias to the legendary Romans, many civilizations have walked the sands of Matala Beach.

At the edge of the beach there are some Neolithic caves that in the 1960s, hippies used as shelters. Matala Beach was a famous hippie hangout until the Church drove them away from the golden sands.

Today the caves are fenced off and what was once a fishing town now survives only on the income from tourism. There is a campground close by the beach and also numerous hotels. Matala beach is very well set out, with toilets, lifeguards, snack bars, and even a volleyball court.

All in all, this makes Matala one of the best beaches in Greece for a family holiday.

How to Get to Matala Beach

Matala Beach is located 68 kilometers southwest of Heraklion, the capital of Crete. A taxi from the city to Matala Beach will take approximately 1 hour. There is also the option of a bus which will take up to 2h 30 mins to reach Matala.

9. Voidokilia Beach, Messinia (one of the best beaches in mainland Greece)

Voidokilia Beach is a natural semicircular strip of dunes that partly forms Gialova Lagoon. The beach, which forms the Greek letter Omega is also a protected bird sanctuary. This helps to keep this beautiful place free from the plagues of the modern age.

The history of Voidokilia Beach stretches back far into the mists of time with signs of occupation dating back to 4000 BC.

To the south of the beach stands a thirteenth-century Frankish castle which was built on the ruins of classical Pylos. Unfortunately, nothing now remains of Pylos, the ruins being used to build the Frankish castle.

For the naturalists out there, you may like to hear that the south end of the beach is a nudist area. This part of the beach attracts those that like to let it all swing free.

The surrounding lagoon and bird sanctuary, make Voidokilia Beach one of the most beautiful in the Greek Islands.

How to Get to Voidokilia Beach

The beach is located in the southwest region of mainland Greece, about 30 minutes from Pylos, the largest town in the area. If you are staying in Athens, buses do leave for Kalamata every three hours. From there you will need to catch another bus or taxi to reach Voidokilia Beach. 

10. Navagio Beach, Zakynthos

Navagio Beach, otherwise known as Shipwreck Beach, is another of the most photographed spots in all of the Greek Islands. This beautiful sheltered piece of heaven easily makes the list of the best beaches in Greece.

Navagio Beach is one of the most picture-postcard views you will ever see. On the white sand lies the ruins of a cigarette smuggler’s ship which sank 30 years ago. Over time the sand has surrounded the ship giving the impression that the ship rises from the sand itself.

Check out the incredible view of the whole cove from the viewing platform! This is definitely one of the best things to do in Zakynthos.

How to Get to Navagio Beach

Navagio Beach is located on the western coast of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea. The cove itself can only be reached by boat which one can take from the small port of Porto Vromi. Boats leave every hour and the trip takes roughly thirty minutes to reach Navagio Beach.

11. Diamandi Beach, Skiathos

Next up is Diamandi Beach, another jewel in the crown of Skiathos. If visited outside of the highs of the tourist season, Diamandi Beach can be your very own little piece of paradise. This small secluded beach offers beautiful sand and turquoise blue waters to swim in.

Regrettably, however, in the high season (July and August) day trips drop tourists on the beach so it does lose a bit of its allure. During any other months however, Diamandi Beach ranks up there with the best beaches in Greece.

How to Get to Diamandi Beach

Diamandi Beach is situated on the southernmost tip of Skiathos Island. As stated, this is just one of the many beautiful beaches that this island has to offer.

Buses stop in the nearby town of Sklithri and from there it is a one-kilometer hike to the beach. For its secludedness, the hike is more than worth it.

12. Lindos Beach, Rhodes

Next is Lindos Beach, arguably Rhodes’ most beautiful sunbathing spot. The history of the Greek Islands is one of the reasons that draws countless travellers to these shores every year. Lindos Beach has both history and beauty all rolled into one.

Rising above the sands of the beach is the ancient Acropolis. The huge castle was fortified successively by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and also the Ottomans. This has left the area steeped in history, with some incredible places to explore.

The beach, just like the nearby St Paul’s Bay, offers some perfect swimming conditions and is a great family destination.

How to Get to Lindos Beach

Located just a couple of kilometers from St Paul’s Bay, Lindos Beach is 55 kilometers from Rhodes town on the eastern coast of the Island. Being one of the most popular beaches in Greece, Lindos Beach can be reached by either taxi or bus from anywhere on the island.

13. Mylopotamos Beach, Pelion

Mylopotamos Beach is a stunning white pebbled beach, which also boasts beautiful crystal blue waters. The beach itself is divided by rocks with a twisting and winding path leading to each part. There is a small tunnel that leads through the rocks connecting the two sides of the beach.

Above Mylopotamos beach is a bar and a few restaurants which is also where the paths down to the beach starts. These winding paths are shaded by fragrant pine trees and offer a nice gentle stroll down to the sands. This is another one of the best beaches in mainland Greece.

How to Get to Mylopotamos Beach

Mylopotamos Beach is on the eastern coast of the Pelion peninsula on the shores of the Aegean Sea. The nearest village to the beach is Tsagarada, which can be reached by taking a bus from the nearby city of Volos. From there it is another short bus journey to Mylopotamos Beach.

14. Balos Beach, Crete

Next up is another of the Greek Islands’ stunning beaches. Balos Beach has beautiful white sand and some of the clearest water in Greece — which is helping it to rise in the rankings of the best beaches in Greece.

This spectacular place, which is located on the edge of Balos Lagoon, also boasts its own piece of history.

Opposite the beach there is a rocky island called Gramvoussa, perched atop of this rocky bastion is an ancient Venetian castle. The climb up the steep cliffs is more than worth it, in addition to the sweeping views, one can also explore the Venetian castle.

How to Get to Balos Beach

There are two ways to get to Balos Beach. The island is accessible by boat, the other is by road along a track from Kaliviani, a village that is close to Kissamos. The track is 10 kilometers long and is only suitable for 4x4s. If you decide to take the sea route, boat excursions leave from Kissamos throughout the morning. Click here for details.

15. Xi Beach, Kefalonia

Finally, and last on the list of the best beaches in Greece, is Xi Beach. Characterized by the surrounding white rocky hills and reddish-brown sand, this is another of the Greek Islands’ little pieces of paradise.

On the beach itself, there is a beach bar which serves drinks and food, also for the more adventurous types there is a water sports centre. This is definitely one of the best Kefalonia beaches.

Xi Beach has shallow waters and very few waves, which consequently makes this a perfect destination for young children. The area has been built up for the tourist trade and offers lots of accommodation, and also there are plenty of bars and restaurants in the area.

How to Get to Xi Beach

Xi Beach is situated on the southwestern coast of Kefalonia Island around 10 kilometers from the town of Lixouri. The beach is easily accessible by either public bus or by taxi from both Lixouri and Argostoli.

It is also possible to rent a private boat and go on a tour, but that can get quite pricey. If you are traveling on a budget, the bus is the best option.

Vlore is considered to be the oldest city in Albania, and so the history here is long and rich. If you’ve spent any time in the museums of Tirana, it’s likely that you’ll have heard of Vlore.

As well as being home to a fascinating history, it’s also the start of the wonderful stretch of coastline known as the Albanian Riviera; home to some of the most spectacular shorelines.

I spent almost two months exploring the coastline of Albania, including Vlore, and loved exploring the region. If you’re planning ways to spend your time in Vlore, here are my top 15 recommendations:

Best Things To Do in Vlore

Considered the starting point of the Albanian Riviera, there are some amazing places to visit in Vlore. It’s perfect for history buffs as well as those that are looking for boat trips and beaches.

Here are some of my top things to do in Vlore:

1. Take a Walking Tour of the Old Town

Get your bearings on this excellent walking tour in Vlore. You’ll be paired with a local guide who will guide you seamlessly through the most important areas of Vlore and help you gain a real appreciation for this city.

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Vlore is its beautiful Old Town. It’s recently been totally renovated and offers a picture-perfect setting with some amazing bars and restaurants to explore. You’ll stroll the cobbled streets and learn all about its fascinating history.

As well as the Old Town, you’ll also visit the Independence Monument and Muradie Mosque, both of which feature separately on this list.

2. Take a Boat Trip to Sazan Marine National Park

This superb full-day boat tour is the perfect way to visit the only marine national park in Albania.

The park covers an area of over 125 square kilometers and includes both Sazan Island and the Karaburan Peninsula. It’s been designated as a Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance due to the immense number of bird and plant species it supports.

Explore the park by speedboat with a small group. You’ll explore Sazan Island and learn about its inhabited Old Town before cooling off in the incredibly clear waters that surround the island.

The boat will next take you speeding off to Haxhi Ali Cave, one of the most beautiful places to visit near Vlore, where you can swim and snorkel in the cave. Finally, you’ll arrive at a stunning beach on the Karanburan Peninsula where you can have lunch, some drinks, and explore the local beaches.

3. Visit Zvernec Monastery

Zvernec Monastery is one of my favorite places to visit in Vlore. It’s a 13th-century monastery that’s located on a small island in the middle of a lagoon, to the north of Vlore.

The monastery and St Mary’s Church are located on a tiny island surrounded by hundreds of pine trees. You can reach the island from the mainland over a rickety wooden bridge and can head inside the Church to marvel at the beautiful paintings inside.

It’s an excellent trip from Vlore. I hired a push-bike from Vlore and reached the monastery in around an hour before (I’d suggest hiring a scooter instead, depending on the heat…). It’s one of the best free things to do in Vlore, although I would recommend leaving a few Albanian Lek in the donation box at the Church if you can.

4. Stroll the Vlore Promenade at Sunset

Vlore has been modernized over the recent years and nowhere is this more obvious than at the promenade.

The promenade stretches up to 5 kilometers along the Ionian Coast in Vlore. It has cycle paths and a wide pedestrian path and is lined with lots of bars, restaurants, and hotels.

The Vlore promenade really comes to alive at night when the bars play a variety of music to suit all tastes. Head out for a meal early evening at one of the excellent restaurants along its length.

One of the best things to do in Vlore at night is to simply stroll along the promenade with the rest of the crowd. Stop for some food, or a drink, or just enjoy the party atmosphere. There’s something here for everyone.

5. Dive into the Incredible Blue Eye

Vlore is seen as the gateway to the Albanian Riviera, and as a result, it’s an amazing place to explore the rest of Southern Albania. One of my absolute highlights is the Blue Eye. It’s one of the most incredible things to do near Vlore.

This stunning, natural spring rises from at least 50 meters below ground and flows into the Blue Eye National Park. It’s located in a jungle-like setting and is one of the most beautiful spots in Albania. Join this amazing day tour of Southern Albania and tick off some of the best things to do around Vlore.

Dive into the crystal clear waters of the Blue Eye, explore the stunning stone city of Gjirokaster, and explore Porto Palermo Castle on the way back. This comprehensive day trip is one of the best ways to explore this part of the country and is one of the best ways to see the most beautiful sights.

6. Visit the Independence Monument

If you’re looking to do a little sightseeing in Vlore, you should definitely visit the Independence Monument.

This huge monument depicts the first Prime Minister of Albania and one of the leaders of the Independence movement, Ismail Qemali, and represents Albania’s declaration of independence from the Ottomans in 1912. It’s one of the most important historical things to see in Vlore.

The monument is located in Flag Square, which is lined with palm and pine trees and has seats to watch the world go by. Grab a coffee and sit in the sunshine for a while, observing the city. There’s a coffee shop called Top Caffé just five minutes away that I’d definitely recommend.

7. Go Tandem Paragliding

If you’re an adventure traveler and are looking for fun things to do in Vlore, you should definitely check out this paragliding experience in Vlore.

The team is super knowledgeable; making you feel completely safe throughout the experience. The views of the coast are absolutely incredible, and you can see the spectacularly blue water and white beaches for miles, as well as the rugged, mountainous terrain.

If you’re feeling daring, the pilots can also perform some in-flight acrobatics for you which are recorded on a go-pro for you to take home with you. It’s definitely one of the most exhilarating things to do in Vlore. Click here to book your flight.

8. Catch Some Rays at Narta Beach

Narta Beach is, without a doubt, the best beach in Vlore. It’s located to the north of the city and is accessible by car or bicycle (if you’re feeling active!).

When I visited Narta Beach, I rented a bicycle and rode up the cycle path to the shore. It’s around 9 kilometers, so it’s not a short distance, but it’s predominantly flat, and you follow the coastline up so it’s a pleasant journey.

The beach itself is beautifully calm, and the sand is soft and golden, which is hard to find along the Albanian coast. There’s also a lovely restaurant there, Karafili Resort, which I’d recommend you try. Overall, Narta Beach is one of my favorite places to visit in Vlore.

9. Admire Muradie Mosque

Muradie Mosque is a very cute stone mosque that was built in 1537 by the Ottomans. Although it’s small, it’s stunning and was actually built by the same architect who built the impressive Suleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul.

While the mosque is used as a meeting point for tourists, it is, of course, a historical place of worship, but if you take your shoes off and are dressed suitably, you can enter the mosque to respectfully view from the inside.

It’s located right by Flag Square, and Independence Monument, so I’d recommend seeing them all in one go during a morning or afternoon of sightseeing in Vlore.

10. Hire a Private Speedboat to Karaburan Peninsula

As Vlore is located next to the Sazan National Park, it’s one of the most popular things to see during your visit, and for good reason. As well as the option of a boat trip to Sazan Island, you could explore the Karabarun Peninsula on this private speedboat tour.

It’s a private tour that gives you control of where you want to go and how long you want to stay there before moving on. You’ll go to the beautiful Sazan Island, as well as Haxha Ali Cave, and have the chance to take a trip to the stunning Grama Bay.

On the speedboat, you’ll be able to sip fresh drinks or beers while you enjoy the amazing views of the caves and bays of the coast. It’s a really special thing to do in Vlore as a couple. Click here to book.

11. Hike Llogara National Park

The Llogara National Park is to the south of Vlore, and just before you get to the town of Dhermi. It’s one of the best places to visit in Vlore if you love hiking, with lots of scenic, and well-marked trails on offer.

It’s open almost all year round and sees very little rain, so you’re likely to have a dry hike. People go hiking here for the views of the coast, and the contrast between the sea and the forest is really a sight to behold.

The Llogara Pass, which runs through the National Park, is an incredible (if not, slightly terrifying) road that winds down the side of the mountain to reveal beautiful views of the coast. It’s definitely worth going to the viewpoint.

12. Visit the Museum of National Independence

This small museum is considered to be the first one in Albania before the 90s and the fall of communism.

It’s filled to the brim with history and if you want to learn about Albania’s fight for independence, then you’ll love this place. It’s also a great place to learn all about the meaning behind the Independence Monument, which also features on this list.

I’d recommend taking a guide around the museum to really understand the importance of the events of 1912 and the exhibits on display. The museum is open Tuesday – Sunday and there’s a small entrance fee.

13. Explore Kanine Castle

Kanine Castle is in the village of Kanine, just 6 kilometers from Vlore, and has amazing views of the Vlore coast. Like the rest of Albania, the castle has seen many different rulers, from Byzantine to Serbian to Ottoman.

The castle isn’t anything spectacular and has seen its fair share of destruction over the years, more recently being bombed during WWII. However, the grounds and the incredible views more than make up for it.

If you take a picnic with you, it’s one of the best things to do in Vlore.

14. Take a Boat to Grama Bay

Grama Bay is so beautiful, it deserves an entry all to itself. This boat tour explores the beautiful bay of Grama, along with other hidden bays and caves along the coast, all of which are untouched with perfect water for snorkeling.

You’ll spend three hours exploring the bright white, pebbly beach of Grama Bay, a very small bay that’s surrounded by hills covered in greenery, which is the final stop on the tour. Here, you’ll be able to soak up the sun and swim in the clearest bright blue and green water.

The Karaburun Peninsula and Grama Bay are really special places because, unlike many other bays and beaches in the south of Albania, they largely remain untouched. Grama Bay is a must-see and is one of the best things to do in Vlore.

15. Take a Boat Trip at Sunset

One of the best things to do in Vlore for couples is to take this incredible boat trip along the Vlore coast at sunset.

While you sip away on your drink of choice, you’ll get to see the coast of Vlore drenched in orange sunlight, and the ocean light up as the sun goes down on this brilliant trip.

Quick Travel Itineraries For Vlore

Here are a couple of suggested itineraries for you to follow or adapt depending on how much time you have to spend in Vlore. These include some of the best places to visit in Vlore that are featured on this list to help you plan an epic trip!

1 Day in Vlore Itinerary

If you only have one day and want to do some sightseeing in Vlore, I’d recommend that you do the walking tour of Vlore in the morning to learn a bit about the history and culture of the city. This will also tick off a few of the other items on this list.

In the afternoon, go and relax on the beach or take a sunset tour to see the beauty of the coastline.

2-3 Days in Vlore Itinerary

If you have a couple of extra days, I would still do the walking tour on day one to help you understand the city and find your way around.

For the remaining two days, head out on a boat trip to Sazan Island and the Karaburun Peninsula. This is where you’ll find the most beautiful water in Vlore and there are some great snorkeling opportunities. In the evening, be sure to check out the Old Town and go for a drink at Komiteti.

On the third day, you could either do a beach day at Narte Beach or head out on another boat trip to Grama Bay. Either will be a perfect end to your trip to Vlore.

1 Week in Vlore Itinerary

If you have an entire week in Vlore, you’ll be able to check out all the best things to do in Vlore that feature on this list. I recommend that you follow the itinerary for 2-3 days, but maybe spread the boat trips out a little bit if you want to.

With your extra few days, I would definitely recommend spending a day in the Llogara National Park, particularly if you love to be in nature and hike. I’d also recommend paragliding tandem flights because the views are unrivaled. Finally, the Blue Eye is a must-visit and is easy to get to from Vlore, particularly on this one day tour.

Where to Stay in Vlore

These are a few of the best neighborhoods in Vlore for tourists:

Old Town – Best for History and Culture

The Old Town is one of the best places to visit in Vlore, and it’s gorgeous. It’s also close to many of the main historical and cultural monuments in the City, including the Muradie Mosque and Independence Monument.

In the evening, the Old Town is home to lots of bars, cafes, and restaurants that come alive and it’s probably my favorite place to be at night in Vlore. It’s also the more local area of town, so it feels much more authentic than at the beach, where it’s more touristy.

I recommend Bohemian Boutique Suites as the rooms are gorgeous, and it’s right in the heart of Old Town.

Plazhi i Ri- Best For Nightlife

If you’re going to Vlore to enjoy the beach and explore the coast, I recommend you stay by the beach, Plazhi i Ri, or Central Beach. There’s lots going on here, and you’ll find many bars, clubs, and restaurants along the main embankment.

I recommend Lungomare Hotel as it’s very close to the beach while being off the main street, away from the noise late at night.

City Centre – Best For First-Time Visitors

The City Centre is a great choice if you’re visiting Vlore for the first time as it’s right between the Old Town and the beach; just a short walk to both. There are a lot of bars, cafes, restaurants, and shops dotted along the main road which joins the old town to the beach.

This comfy one-bed apartment is within walking distance of the Old Town and the beach and has great city views.

Best Restaurants in Vlore

There are so many restaurants in Vlore to choose from, here are some of my favorites:

Anchor Pizzeria

If you want pizza, the Anchor Pizzeria is the place to go. I’ve visited a few times and have never been disappointed. It’s right on the beach road and the service is generally fantastic. It does get really busy after around 9 pm, but if you go before, you’ll be able to get a table easily.

Novus Traditional Restaurant

Novus is a great place to visit to sample Albanian cuisine. I recommend ordering lots of small dishes to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the different flavors Albanian cuisine has to offer. If you’re ordering a main dish, the moussaka here is spectacular.

Pasticeri Likaj

This is actually a bakery rather than a restaurant, but I had to include Pasticeri Likaj because if you’re after a sweet treat, you have to go here. The croissants are absolutely delicious and maybe the best I’ve ever had. Also, the ice cream is number one in town.

Tre Forchette

Tre Forchette is one of the best restaurants in Vlore, and if you want to eat somewhere a little more upmarket, this restaurant is the place to visit. It’s a more expensive option than the other restaurants on this list, but the food and service are excellent.

The seafood is absolutely incredible, I shared the seafood platter with a friend and it was amazing.

Gaia

Gaia is my favorite restaurant in the Old Town, with a relaxing outdoor area and a cozy interior. You have to try the pasta if you’re eating here – it’s homemade and so tasty. The cheese ravioli is delicious.

I would say it’s pretty cheap (by UK standards) but a mid-range restaurant in Albania. Definitely worth a visit.

Getting To Vlore

If you’re traveling to Vlore, it’s likely that you’ll be traveling from Tirana as this is where the main airport is. It’s super easy to get to Vlore from Tirana. The easiest way is by bus, which will take around 3 hours, and cost you around $6.

The buses depart from Tirana Airport or the Bus Station approximately every 30 minutes. You can check the timetable here.

You can of course grab a taxi to Vlore, but this will be more expensive, and I found the bus to be easy and comfortable.

When you arrive in Vlore, it’s good to know that the areas are quite spaced out. For example, it’ll take you around 50 minutes to walk from the Old Town to the main beach and vice versa.

I recommend that you rent a bike, or take taxis, which are very affordable in Vlore. You can rent from Moto Rent Vlore. It’s €5 a day for a bicycle or €20 a day for a scooter.

I’ve been visiting the Cotswolds for years and Broadway is one of my favorite places thanks to its gorgeous stone cottages, country pubs, and scenic walks. I love filling my time while here by visiting nearby stately homes and nature reserves and sampling the local cuisine that can be found at the many great restaurants in town.

The village is also known for its arts scene with lots of galleries and studios dotted around the town and an annual arts festival that attracts thousands of visitors. This idyllic village looks like it’s come straight off of a postcard and is a must-visit for anyone planning on visiting the Cotswolds.

Best Things To Do in Broadway

Below, you’ll find a wide variety of places to visit in Broadway from the historic tower to the Gorden Russell Design Museum, Millenium Garden, and large Deer Park where these magnificent creatures roam free over the Cotswold countryside.

1. Climb the Broadway Tower

The impressive Broadway Tower is a folly (like a castle but ornamental rather than built for defense) atop Broadway Hill just outside of the village. The 65-foot (20-meter) tower stands 1,024 feet (312 meters) above sea level offering magnificent, panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

This iconic landmark is set within 200 acres of land and was constructed in 1798 from the plans by landscape designer Capability Brown. Inside, you’ll find a beautiful Georgian interior that also doubles as a museum stretched over the building’s three floors.

It’s possible to climb the 60 (odd) steps to the top which is one of the best things to do in Broadway to get a feel for the incredible location. The tower is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm and tickets cost £14 for adults and £6 for children. Tickets include access to the museum, tower rooftop, and grounds.

2. Walk Around the Deer Park

The Broadway Deer Park is a 200-acre stretch of parkland that includes the Broadway Tower, Tower Barn Shopping Center, Morris and Brown Cafe, and even an underground nuclear bunker. There’s a pleasant circular walk that takes around 20 minutes to complete, as well as other trails to try, and there are E-bikes to rent for those who wish to explore with ease.

The park is one of the best places to visit in Broadway for families and dogs are also welcome if kept on a lead. This is the perfect place for a picnic thanks to its absolutely gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside and is one of my favorite places in the Cotswolds to get away from it all.

If you’re lucky, you might spot one of the red deer including the stag Lancelot. If you don’t want to climb the tower or see the museum, you can purchase a grounds-only ticket (£4 for adults and £2 for children), though I do recommend you take the opportunity to climb the tower for the views while you’re there.

3. Admire the Picturesque High Street

The picturesque High Street is one of the best things to see in Broadway thanks to its beautiful honey-colored cottages and shops built from the ubiquitous Cotswold stone. This is definitely one of the most Insta-worthy places in the village; it’s picture-perfect.

The High Street is packed with interesting shops selling everything from second-hand books to flowers, locally made foods, and handicrafts. There are also plenty of excellent tea rooms, pubs, cafes, and restaurants to try out (I recommend Russell’s of Broadway, The Broadbean, and Tisanes Tea Rooms in particular).

4. See the Gordon Russell Design Museum

You’ll see the name Gordon Russell frequently in Broadway thanks to this famous designer’s long association with the town. Russell set up a furniture company with his father in 1922 and pioneered a style of furniture-making that made his creations accessible to everyone.

The Gordon Russell Design Museum houses many of his creations as well as a history of the man himself and the village. This is a great place to visit if you really want to get a feel for the village over the last 100 years. The museum is open from 10 am to 4 pm Tuesday to Sunday and entrance costs £7 for adults (children go free).

5. Visit the Cotswold Lavender Farm

The stunning Cotswold Lavender Farm sits on a hill overlooking the pristine Vale of Evesham just 3 miles (4.8 km) from Broadway. From June to August every year you can walk amongst the sweet-smelling purple flowers and take in the beautiful countryside views (July is the peak flowering season).

The farm occupies over 70 acres of land with 35 different varieties of lavender which look incredible against the Cotswolds backdrop during the height of the season. You can visit an onsite distillery to learn how lavender oil is extracted and how it’s turned into everyday products.

In the associated gift shop you can pick up lavender-scented souvenirs and gifts such as fragrances, candles, and more. The farm also has idyllic, woodland walking trails, a wildflower meadow, and a small cafe selling snacks and hot and cold drinks. Open every day from 14th June until 6th August from 10 am to 5 pm. Tickets cost £7.50 for adults and £3.75 for children.

6. Attend the Broadway Arts Festival

The Broadway Arts Festival runs every year in June (9th to 18th June 2023) and hosts up to 80 different events from displays and workshops to village walks, yoga classes, and more. Learn how to construct animals from wire, take an oil painting masterclass or try your hand at clay shaping with expert tutors.

The festival is open to all ages and is one of the most fun things to do in Broadway for the whole family. With everything from music and theater to talks, dance, fitness, and more there’s bound to be something to keep everyone entertained. You can book tickets in advance online, but act fast as they tend to sell out quickly.

The events take place in various locations across the village from the grounds of Broadway Tower to the village green, Cidermll Theatre, and the local church. The opening artBEAT which takes place on the first weekend of the festival showcases the work of some of Britain’s top artists and designers.

7. Visit Snowshill Manor and Gardens

The 16th Century Snowshill Manor House and Gardens is a historic residence in the hamlet of Snowshill on the outskirts of Broadway. The house is home to an assembly of objects and curious collectibles by former owner Charles Wade who also painstakingly restored the house to its former glory.

There’s plenty to do at Snowshill Manor and exploring the collection of items on display from suits of armor to costumes and more is a great way to spend an afternoon. Wander around the pristine gardens complete with orchards and the Wolf’s Cove model harbor, or enjoy a snack and cup of tea at the Snowshill Cafe with outdoor seating and panoramic views.

Snowshill is open year-round from 11 am to 4:40 pm seven days a week. Tickets cost £13 for adults and £6.50 for children and include access to the house and gardens. This is definitely one of the best things to do near Broadway and makes for a great day out for the whole family.

8. Check Out the Broadway Museum and Art Gallery

The Broadway Museum and Art Gallery is a must-visit for lovers of the arts as there’s always something interesting going on. The gallery is set within a beautiful 17th Century coaching inn made of the trademark honey-colored Cotswold stone and is one of the few such buildings still open to the public today.

Current exhibitions include Postcards of Broadway, showcasing picture postcards of the village dating back over a century. The Geology of Gravestones offers a fascinating insight into how they’re made, which definitely appeals to my interest in all things spooky, and Journey Through Steam which takes a look back at the golden age of steam.

The gallery hosts regular talks, workshops, and other events so check the website to see what’s going on during your visit. It’s open daily from 10 am to 4:30 pm and entry costs £5 for adults and £2 for children (though selected events may cost extra). This is one of the top things to do in Broadway to get a feel for its connection to the arts.

9. Walk Around Dover’s Hill Nature Reserve

Dover’s Hill is a natural amphitheater on a spur of the Cotswolds with a spectacular view across the Vale of Evesham. It’s overseen by the National Trust and is located just a few miles from Broadway. Seeing this stunning natural vista is one of the best things to do around Broadway and is the perfect place for an afternoon walk.

Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead as there’s often livestock grazing nearby. Parking is free but there aren’t any other amenities here; it’s a great place to escape into the tranquil Cotswolds countryside for a picnic. Driving is the best way to get to the reserve, but it’s also located just 1.6 miles (2.6 km) from the Cotswolds Way hiking trail.

10. Visit the Millenium Park and Garden

The quaint Millenium Garden is a tranquil escape from the bustling village tucked away next to the Broadway Museum just off the High Street. This small wooded garden enclosure has a couple of benches perfect for taking time out and soaking in the beautiful village views.

This often-overlooked green space is free to enter and is open from sunrise to sunset throughout the year. It’s definitely one of my favorite little hideaways in Broadway.

11. Hike the Cotswolds Way

The Cotswolds Way is a hiking trail that starts in Chipping Campden in Gloucestershire and finishes up in the city of Bath in Somerset. This 102-mile (164 km) trail takes in some of the most beautiful areas of the Cotswolds and passes right through Broadway.

You can choose to hike any section of the trail. Hardcore hikers can attempt the Chipping Campden to Broadway circular walk which takes around five hours to complete, (depending on fitness levels and how many stops you have en route). The easier Broadway and Tower walk takes around two hours in total.

Whether you choose to hike just a mile or the entire thing, this is one of the most scenic hiking paths in the country and will reward you with stunning country vistas and the chance to spot local wildlife, as well as stopping at the odd country pub or two along the way.

12. Take a Steam Train on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is a heritage line with a 28 miles (45 km) round-trip of track between Cheltenham and Broadway. The route by steam train takes you on a journey through some of the most beautiful parts of the Cotswolds as you pass through sleepy hamlets and the lush valleys of the Malvern Hills.

There are lots of different ticket types depending on how you wish to travel but the best value is the all-day rover which is £25 for adults and £10 for children and allows unlimited trips for the day. This is truly one of the best ways to experience the beauty of the Cotswolds at a comfortable pace.

13. Have a Pint in The Swan Inn

There are some excellent pubs in Broadway including The Horse and Hound, The Crown and Trumpet, and my favorite The Swan Inn. This traditional village pub built in the local honey-colored Cotswold stone is the perfect place to relax in the beer garden and watch village life go by.

The recently refurbished bar stocks a wide variety of local craft ales, ciders, and imported beers and wines. The kitchen serves a wonderful selection of lunches and main meals from salads and sandwiches to burgers, fish and chips, and locally sourced, seasonal British dishes.

The pub is open daily from 11 am until 11 pm and they have lots of great deals on food and drinks throughout the week. If you’re looking for a proper British country pub, then The Swan Inn is definitely the place to go. Enjoying a few drinks here is one of the best things to do in Broadway for couples or groups of friends.

14. Visit the Nearby Town of Chipping Norton

Chipping Norton is a quaint market town less than 30 minutes away by car and is one of the best places to visit near Broadway. There are lots of wonderful things to do from exploring the bustling high street and its many shops to browsing the weekly farmers’ markets.

The town is well-known as the home of many famous and influential people from former Prime Minister David Cameron to Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson. There’s an outdoor swimming pool, an excellent theater, and lots of beautiful Cotswold stone architecture to see from the Almshouses to Bliss Tweed Mill.

The best way to get to Chipping Norton is to drive (follow the A44) as there aren’t any local buses for this route. Another great way to see the town and other highlights of the Cotswolds is to take a tour like this half-day tour from Oxford that also includes Bourton on the Water and Stow on the Wold. 15. Take a Day Trip to Bourton on the Water

Bourton on the Water is another beautiful Cotswold village famed for its honey-colored houses and charming rural scenes. There are lots of interesting things to do in Bourton such as walking along the charming River Windrush, seeing the impressive model village, and sampling craft ale at the local Hawkstone Brewery.

It’s possible to paddle in the river in warmer weather so the village is a great place for families who love the outdoors. There are also many wonderful pubs and restaurants in Bourton on the Water serving up everything from pub grub to fine dining. The Mousetrap Inn is one of the most famous pubs in the village and well worth a visit.

Bourton is just a 20-minute drive from Broadway, but unfortunately, there isn’t much in the way of public transport in this neck of the woods (you can book a tour instead). Regardless, Bourton on the Water is definitely one of the best places to visit near Broadway for its picture-perfect stone houses along the river.

Getting to Broadway

Birmingham International is the closest airport to Broadway and is just over an hour’s drive via the M42. You’ll need to rent a car as it’s not easy to get from the airport to the rural village of Broadway. From London, it’s just over a three-hour drive along the M40.

If trying to reach Broadway via public transport you’ll need to get to one of the nearby towns or cities such as Oxford and then continue on from there, though this can take quite some doing. When visiting this part of the country I recommend having a car.

Getting around the village is easy enough on foot as it’s not a big place, but again, if you wish to explore the surrounding Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty then hiring a car is the best option as buses are few and far between and most small towns and villages aren’t served by the railway.
